Montessori Lesson Plan

The Lived Experience of a Classmate Who Is Different Than the Majority of Children
in the Classroom Community

Learning Outcome: Guiding children to understand, appreciate, respect, and accept human
differences

People and/or Materials Required: The child whose life is being highlighted; the teacher; and if
possible one or both of the child’s parents, grandparents, or caregivers

Lesson Presentation Sequence:

1. The parent, grandparent, caregiver, or teacher of the child begins by saying, “I/we are
going to tell you the story of (child’s name) life, from when he was a baby until right
now.”

2. The story should include the following:

 Time and place of child’s birth

 Facts about the child’s family
 Some beautiful, fun, or funny stories about the child as they grew up
 Some interesting facts about the child’s unique qualities, interests or talents

3. If the child being highlighted is comfortable and verbal enough to add to the story of
their life, they may be invited to do so.

Points of Interest: Photos and videos can be included to enhance the story of the child’s life.
Favorite objects of the child can also be presented.

Photos and objects can be displayed that day on a “Sharing Table” for the children in the
classroom community to look at during work periods.
