d. List the assumptions made in theory of simple bending.
e. State the theorem of perpendicular axis and parallel axis.
f. A closed coil helical spring is to carry a load of 500 N. The mean coil diameter is 10 times that of
wire diameter. Calculate the diameters of spring and coil if the maximum shear stress in the
material of the spring is 80 N/mm2.
g. Define any five mechanical properties of a material.
h. Describe the functions of a spring. Write the formulas for calculating stiffness for springs
connected in parallel and series.

i. A simply supported beam of 16m span, carries concentrated load of 400N, 500N and 300N at a
distance of 3m, 7m and 11m from left support. Draw the shear force and bending moment
diagrams.

ii. A tensile teat was conducted on a mild steel specimen having diameter 30mm and gauge length

of 240mm. The load at elastic limit is 65KN and corresponding elongation is 0.14mm. The

maximum load is 145KN and load at fracture is 85KN. Calculate (i) modulus of elasticity (ii)

iii. Determine the moment of inertia od a T-section of dimensions 100X100X20 mm about the

iv. Determine the ratio of buckling strength of a hollow and solid circular column. Both columns are

made of same material and have same length, same cross sectional area and same end
conditions. The inner diameter of hollow column is half of external diameter.
