Queen Victoria: the grandmother of Europe

Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent was born in May of 1819 at Kensington Palace in London. Her
father was the fourth son of the King of England, George III. Three of the sons died before 1830, and
one of them was Victoria’s father. The last son, William IV, became the king in 1830. When he died in
1837, Victoria became the queen at 18 years old.
Once she became Queen, Victoria decided to move into Buckingham Palace, and was the first member
of the royal family to live there. Three years later, she married Prince Albert at the age of 21. Their
marriage became one of the most famous marriages in history, and Victoria remained Queen of England
for 63 years until she died in 1901. Victoria’s time as Queen was the longest of any British king or queen
until Queen Elizabeth II.
During her time as Queen, Victoria had 9 children. Many of them eventually married princes or
princesses of other European countries. As a result, Queen Victoria had 42 grandchildren all over the
continent by the end of her life. That’s why people called her the grandmother of Europe.

1 Who was the king the year before Victoria became the queen?
___________________________________________________
2 How old was she when she became the queen?
___________________________________________________
3 When did she get married?

4 How long was Victoria queen?
