Nilgiri tahr are found only on the mountains

Well-named as varai-aadu or rock goat, they

live in steep cliffs, open grasslands, and shola

forest edges. Against the rocks, tahr are

highly camouflaged, often seen only when
CÆ»[Qß EøÓÂh®. £õøÓPÎÞ÷h
sky-lined on the ridges. Females and young
C¸US®÷£õx CøÁPøÍU PshÔÁx
have a grey-brown coat, whereas adult
PiÚ®. ©ø»²a]PÎÀ {hUS®÷£õx
males are stone grey with a whitish ‘saddle’
£õºUP»õ®. ö£møh²® Smi²® \õ®£À
on their back. Herds of over 100 individuals
|Ózv¼¸US®. Bs P¤» |ÓzvÀ, ¬xQÀ
may be seen, foraging on grasses and herbs
öÁÒøÍ|Ó¨£µ¨¦ öPõsi¸US®. 100
in grasslands and cliffs. The Grass Hills-

Eravikulam area is the major stronghold of

this endemic and threatened species.
