Display Screen
Display Screen

Display screen means the display part of a monitor. Most display screens work under the same
principle as a television, using a cathode ray tube (CRT). Consequently, the term CRT is often used
in place of display screen.

Types of Display Screens

CRT Monitor

CRT monitor is the most common form of display screens, it looks like a television. It can display
text and graphics.

SLO # 1.3.4 Computer Hardware

How CRT works

CRT in color monitors consists of

three guns these guns generate
red, green and blue (RGB)
colors. The other colors are
generated with the combination
of these three colors.

Types of Display Screens
Flat panel display
Flat-panel monitors take less space and are lightweight. These monitors use much less power than
CRTs. Notebook computers use flat panel monitors. Flat panel display is made up of two plates of
glass. These plates contain a substance between them. The substance is activated in different
ways.

Flat Panel Display
1. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

This type of display screen contains a substance called liquid crystal. The molecules of this
substance line up in such a way that the light behind the screens blocked or allowed to create an
image.

Advantages of flat panel display over CRT
The advantages of flat panel display over CRT are as follows:

1. It takes less desk space.

2. It uses less energy than CRT monitor.
3. It uses liquid crystal technology.
4. Its weight is less than CRT.
5. It is used for notebook computers, PDAs, cellular phones and
personal computers.
6. It does not emit harmful radiation.

Printers

SLO # 1.3.4 Computer Hardware

Printers
Printer is a device that accepts text and graphic output from a
computer and transfers the information to paper, usually to standard
size sheets of paper.

Printers are a type of computer peripheral device that fall into two
broad categories:
• 2D printers that print text and graphics onto paper (or other
media)
• 3D printers that create physical objects.

SLO # 1.3.4 Computer Hardware

2D Printers
2D printers are by far the most common type of printer. This category
can be subdivided based on the type of technology used to transfer
images onto paper. Modern printers generally fall into one of the
following categories:

✓ Laser
✓ Inkjet
✓ Led
✓ Thermal printer
✓ Dye-sublimation
SLO # 1.3.4 Computer Hardware
Laser Printer

Its working is similar to photocopying machine. It uses laser beams to burn

special powder on page to create a permanent image. The power is
contained in toner.

Laser printer prints complete page at a time. It is also known as page

printer. The printing speed of laser printers is 5 to 300 pages per minute
(ppm). The speed depends on the contents being printed. The plain text is
printed faster than graphics.

SLO # 1.3.4 Computer Hardware

Laser Printer

Laser printer prints text and graphics in a high quality resolution, a

typical laser printer provides the resolution of 1200dpi or more. Laser
printer prints at higher speed than inkjet and dot matrix printers. It
does not make much noise. Laser printer is mostly used in business
field.

SLO # 1.3.4 Computer Hardware

Inkjet Printer

It prints characters and graphics by spraying tiny drops of liquid ink

on paper. These printers can produce quality text and graphics in
both black-and-white and color including photos. A typical inkjet
printer provides resolution of 300 dots per inch. The latest inkjet
printers provide higher resolution.

Inkjet Printer
The price of inkjet printers is less than laser printers. However, they
are slower than laser printers. Most inkjet printers can print from 10
to 35 pages per minute. However, they print graphics and colors at
slower rate. The print quality of inkjet printers is higher than dot
matrix printer. They are also comparatively inexpensive. Most inkjet
printers usually have two print cartridges. One cartridge contains
black ink and the other contains color.

LED Printer

Similar to a laser printer, LED printers are non-impact but use a light-
emitting diode instead of a laser in the printhead. LED function by focusing
light across the entire length of the drum, thus creating areas that are less
charged, which attracts toner. The printer then transfers the toner from
the drum to the paper and applies intense heat to fuse the toner to the
paper.
LED printers have no moving parts in the printhead, which makes them
inherently more durable over time.

Thermal Printer

Thermal printer uses color waxes and heat to produce images on

special paper. The color wax sheets are not required for black-and-
white output. Thermal printers are expensive and require costly
paper. These printers are used to create the highest-quality color
printing.

SLO # 1.3.4 Computer Hardware

Dye-sublimation

Dye-sublimation printers work by heating solid ink so that it can be

deposited on a solid surface, such as plastic or ceramic. These printers are
used for printing photos and ID cards, as well as for printing on things like
coffee mugs and T-shirts.

Dye-sublimation printers use a special overcoating instead of black with

the other standard ink colors, so dye-sublimation uses the CMYO (cyan,
magenta, yellow, overcoating) system, though some printers do use black
ink.

3D Printers
3D printers work by depositing layers of material on top of each other
to create a physical object. This type of process is also sometimes
called additive manufacturing.

Currently, companies are investing in a lot of research and

development around 3D printing, and the technology is changing
rapidly. 3D printing is expected to grow in popularity as the
technology improves.

Lets see how 3D printer works….

Plotter
A plotter is a computer vector graphic printer that gives a hard copy of
the output based on instructions from the system. Plotters are widely
used to print designs of things such as cars, ships and buildings on a
piece of paper using a pen. Plotters are different than a printer in that
they are more precise and they are most commonly used in
engineering, where precision is mandatory. They are also more
expensive than ordinary printers.

A plotter is also known as a graph plotter.

Plotters
Types of Plotters

1. Drum Plotter
2. Flatbed Plotter

SLO # 1.3.4 Computer Hardware

A Drum Plotters
drum plotter is a pen plotter that wraps the paper around a drum with a
pin feed attachment. The drum then rotates the paper as pens move
across it and draw the image. It was the first output device used to print
graphics and large engineering drawings.

Flatbed Plotters

A flat-bed plotter is a mechanical drafting device used with many CAD

programs for designers. The paper remains stationary on a flat surface
while a pen moves across it horizontally and vertically. This plotter may
use several different pen colors to create the graphics. The size of the
graphic is limited to the size of the flat-bed plotter's surface.

Speaker and Headphone
Microphones, speakers and headphones are components commonly
used as the input and output devices of many circuits. A microphone
converts sound waves into electrical signals that closely follow the
waveform of the sound being received.
