English HL

Grade 11
Envelope Activity
(Preparation for Literary Essay Test)

Instructions

Each pupil will receive an envelope with a thread / topic about the novel. As you
read, collect passages and quotes about your particular topic. Copy these passages
/ quotes on the provided index cards. You must include the page number, chapter
number and any important details about the quoted text. (You will need to be
able to look up the passages again at a later date).

Note: write neatly in PEN, making maximum use of the space on both sides of the
index cards. If you need more cards, ask Mrs M.

The activity will be assessed in the following way:

1. You will trade envelopes with a classmate, who will continue the research
on your topic for a chapter, and then return the envelope to you.

2. You will select one of the passages in your envelope and write an analysis of
the passage, focusing on diction and language usage. Annotation of the
passage (using different coloured pens, highlighters etc.) is required.

3. After reading the entire novel, you will discuss your topic / theme in a small
group (no fewer than 2 and no more than 3 people). The group will assist
you to construct a suitable thesis statement. You will then work together to
find evidence from the index cards that support your thesis statement in a
logical manner. This will involve categorizing the quotes and writing claims
(topic sentences) that support your thesis. You will be given a template that
outlines a traditional 5-paragraph literary essay. (See back of this page).

4. Summative Test: You will write a literary essay (500 – 600 words) on your
Envelope Topic. You will be allowed to take your envelope into the test
venue. The envelope will have only the completed and annotated index
cards in it. In other words, no copy of the novel nor the essay template will
be allowed. You will hand in your envelope with the completed essay.
