My Challenge Questions:

E2. Why do human beings prefer to settle in the plains?

➢ The rivers flowing down from higher areas such as mountains and plateaus erode the
raised areas.
➢ They carry the eroded materials to the lowlands and deposit it there, plains are formed
➢ Human beings prefer to settle in the plains, as the land is fertile and suitable for cultivation

Cross-Curricular Link: Atmosphere plays an important role in supporting life system.

➢ It provides oxygen for breathing and also acts as blanket around the earth.
➢ The presence of atmosphere around the earth keeps temperature fairly even on the earth.
➢ In the absence of the atmosphere days will be extremely hot and nights extremely cold.

Critical Thinking:
Any change in one realm affects the other realms. Comment.
All the realms or spheres of the earth are connected with each other. Any change in one realm
affects the other realms. Man uses all the components of the Biosphere.

➢ Cutting of trees in the forests increases the rate of soil erosion. (Lithosphere)
➢ This may lead to increased amount of silt in the rivers and thus flooding of the rivers.
(Hydrosphere)
➢ Cutting of trees will also have an adverse effect on the atmosphere as there will be rise in
the level of carbon dioxide and decrease in the oxygen level present in the atmosphere.
➢ Thus, this will pose a threat to the life system on the biosphere.

Extension Task:
What is global warming? How does it affect our lives?

Global warming is the unusually rapid increase in Earth's average surface

temperature over the past century primarily due to the greenhouse gases
released by people burning fossil fuels. Global warming, the gradual heating
of Earth's surface, oceans and atmosphere, is caused by human activity,
primarily the burning of fossil fuels that pump carbon dioxide (CO2), methane
and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Despite political
controversy about climate change. Global warming is an aspect of climate
change, referring to the long-term rise of the planet's temperatures. It
is caused by increased concentrations of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere, mainly from human activities such as burning fossil fuels,
deforestation and farming.
