Students who are non-U.S. citizens or non-U.S. permanent residents and are not already in the U.S. with an
immigration status that allows study must request a nonimmigrant student visa (F-1). The first step is to
obtain a Certificate of Eligibility for a student visa (Form I-20) from JHU's Office of International Services
(OIS). The office will send you an email with a link and instructions to complete a web form and provide
the necessary documentation within five business days. Add the email address ois@jhu.edu to your list of
approved senders, and complete the OIS web form as soon as you receive the link.
If you do not receive the email from OIS by the end of next week, please check your junk/spam email
folder. (Note: OIS will not begin sending students visa instructions until the end of January.) Contact OIS at
ois@jhu.edu if you do not find the email in your junk/spam folder. Receiving the email from OIS is critical.
You cannot continue the visa process without it.
CTY students attending the first session or both sessions must apply for the I-20 visa certificate within two
weeks of receiving this confirmation, and no later than April 1. CTY students attending the second session
only must apply no later than April 15. After these deadlines, OIS cannot guarantee that you will receive
your immigration documentation in time to secure your visa before the program. Visit
https://cty.jhu.edu/summer/enrolled/faqs-visa-summer.html page for more information regarding the visa
process.
Sincerely,

Dear Parent/Guardian:
The opportunity to conduct hands-on investigations in a laboratory setting is one of the hallmarks of CTY
science courses. We are writing to share with you our policies and procedures regarding student lab work,
and to ask for your assistance with ensuring that your student has a safe learning experience in his or her
science course this summer.
An abridged version of CTY’s Laboratory Safety Rules and Guidelines is enclosed. On the first day of
class, instructors will hand out and review the full CTY Laboratory Safety Rules and Guidelines document,
which covers all of the points on the enclosed version along with more detailed site- and course-specific
safety information. Students will then be asked to sign a contract indicating that they understand and agree
to abide by the rules and guidelines. If you would like to see a copy of the more detailed Laboratory Safety
Rules and Guidelines, please visit www.cty.jhu.edu/summer/labsafety.pdf. No student will be permitted to
perform laboratory activities without a signed contract. In addition to reviewing overarching safety rules
and guidelines on the first day of the session, instructional staff will begin each activity with an explanation
of lab-specific procedures and guidelines.
To help prepare your student for the lab experience, we ask that you read and discuss each item on the
enclosed Laboratory Safety Rules and Guidelines document with your student before arrival on site. During
that conversation, please stress with your student the importance of asking questions whenever he or she
does not understand any part of directions or procedures.
In addition to previewing safety information with your student, we urge you to inform your physician of
your student’s plans to participate in a lab course this summer. Some conditions, such as respiratory
problems and contact allergies, can be aggravated by exposure even to low levels of chemicals, fumes, or
other materials commonly found in labs, such as latex. If you or your physician have any concerns about
your student’s health in a lab setting, please contact your site program manager. Our staff will work with
you to determine how best to address the concern.
Finally, please ensure that your student packs appropriate clothing for lab work. For labs involving the use
of chemicals or specimens, students must wear long pants and closed shoes. This is to protect the skin in the
event of a chemical splash. Shoes must cover the student’s entire foot. Traditional sneakers are appropriate
for the lab environment; sandals, flip-flops, and sneakers that leave parts of the foot exposed are not.
Thank you for your help in ensuring a safe laboratory environment for your student this summer. If you
have questions about CTY’s safety efforts in the science courses at your site, please contact your site
program manager.
Sincerely,
CTY Summer Program Science Committe
