AEROSPACEThe Radar Altimeter
With The Popular Price
Pact of the panel-mounted Bendix/King
Silver Crown product line, the KRA 10
Radar Altimeter offers a combination
of capability and reliability at an affordable
price. Now, owners of single-engine and
light twin aircraft can enjoy the advantages
of having AGL. (above-ground level) altitude
information, with all the confidence
ted with the Bendix/King name.
The system features an easy-to-read,
3-inch KI 250 indicator which displays AGL
fi to 2,500 fi. (Displayed
AGL altitude meets published aecuraey
specifications between 50 ft. and 2,000 ft.)
‘The KI 250 also offers continuous selection
Of Decision Height and annunciation of
arrival at Decision Height by both a DH
light and an aural warnin;
“The indicator is white-ighted and can
be manually dimmed; DH lamp dimming
is handled automatically by a photocell.
‘The KI 250 can also drive an auxiliary
DH light, such as that found on the KI 256
Flight Command Indicator for KFC 200
and KFC 150 Flight Director systems.
An auxilia
used by flight
is incladed. Complete self-test capacity
is builtin, and is available both dusi
preflight and flight
The heart of the system is the solid
siate KRA 10A Remote Receiver!
Transmitter Unit. Typically operating
on 28 volts primary power, it can run
‘on 14 volts with the optional KA 133
14V-28V Converter. Its modular, plug
in-board construction facilitates service.
The KRA 10A’s antenna is the
KA 131 model, availabe in two cont
urations: 1. Standard, for mounting
surfaces parallel to the ground: ancl
2. Skewed, for mounting surfaces
Sloped at between 6° and 20°. These
‘options provide additional flexibility
for antenna location
ctors and autopilot,
While the Receiver/Transmitter must
be located within 2 ft, of the antenna, the
indicator ean be placed in virtually any
position, with or without shock mounts.
The complete system weighs just 3.8 Ibs
(1.7 kg), ineludin
The receiveritransmitter’s compact size
just 3.1 x 3.5.x 8 in, (7.9.x 8.9 x 20.3 em)
‘makes it practical for use in aireraft with
limited space for remote installations,
Unlike some radar altimeter,
KRA IO system components do not have
to be calibrate
helps reduce maintenance costs and limits
the amount of time required for service,
a matched set. This
since off-the-shelf components can be inter=
changed with each system, The attached
operator's guide notes the system's
performance features

Pilot Operating Instructions
The KI 250 Indicator for the
KRA I0A Radar Altimeter System has
display scale from 20 ft. to 2,500 f
However, accuracy specifications are
assured only between 50 fi. and 2,000 ft
benefits provided by the KRA I0A, you
should become well acquainted with its
capabilities, its operating characteristics
and its imitations,
Proflight Test
The following preflight test prove
may be performed before takeoff
1. Turn on primary powe
2. Set DH bug to 20 ft.
3. Depress and hold DH Select/Test knob.
The indicated altitude should be
50 +5 fi and the DH lamp should
be off
4. Keep the DH Select/Test knob depressed
\while slowly turning it clockwise. The
DH lamp should light and a two-second
iudio tone will sound (if connected)
When the DH bug reaches $0 = St.
5. Release the DH Select/Test knob.
Normally after the DH knob has
been released, the DH lamp will go out
and the pointer will move clockwise
behind the mask. However, ground
‘opetation near large hangars, other
aircraft, water puddles and other nearby
fbjects may cause the pointer to remain
in view, This does not indicate a system
malfunction since the reflections
constitute a real signa
An installation option is available
fon the KRA 10A which utilizes
a remote (e., strut) switch, preventing
these indications on the ground,
During Takeoff
During takeoff, the unit will leek
fon socn after the aircraft reaches 50 ft
The DH lamp will illuminate if tbe
DH big is st above the lock on altitude
If the DH bug is set between 500 ft and
2.500 ft, an audio tone will be heard
briefly asthe pointer passes through
the DH setting
In Flight
The KI 250 Pointer will indc
AGL altitude from approximately
50 ft up to a maximum of 2,500 ft. The
‘maximum range depends upon the surface
reflectivity. The best reflector is water,
‘while the worst is dry sand. Snow and dry
plowed ground produce fewer reflections
than hard packed soil, Flight over terrain
with low reflectivity will sometimes
ultin loss of lock (the pointer will
move clockwise behind the mask) at an
altitude less than 2,500 fi. The exact
altitude depends on the reflection
Coefficient of the terrain, Assume you are
flying at 2,000 ft, AGL and the altimeter
had unlocked at 1,700 ft, because of poor
terrain reflectivity. The pointer may come
into view occasionally and indicate 2,000
fA. when flying over a small lake or city
This is normal since bodies of water and
buildings are better reflectors.
Loss of lock may also occur when
the aircraft isin a steep bank because
of antenna directivity, The system will
ock when the wings are level again

Ahove 2,500 ft. or when ground
reflections are no longer sufficient for the
KRA 10A to track, the pointer will move
clockwise behind the mask. Below 20 f
the pointer will also move clockwise
behind the mask.
The pointer will move to the “OFF
position if primary power is lost,
When the altitude is below the DH
setting, the DH lamp will come on. The
brightness of this lamp is automatically
controlled in varying light conditions
Also, when the altitude fist reaches
the DH setting, a two (2) second audio
tone will sound through the aircraft
audio panel
On Approach
Prior to an approach, the DH bug
should be set to the desired altitude
Depress the DH Select/Test knob and
hold, The pointer should indicate 50 Sf
and if the DH setting is above 50 ft the
DH lamp andl audio will be activated,
