SKIMMING example
Skimming often refers to the way in
which one reads at a faster rate to
gain the general idea about the
text without paying heed to the
intentional and detailed meaning
of the text. For Example - When
one reads the text only in order to
understand the thesis statement,
in one or two lines.
SCANNING example
For example, when we are searching
for a telephone number in a
directory, we scan the page for the
name of the specific person we are
looking for.
While skimming tells you what general information is within a section,
scanning helps you locate a particular fact.
Use skimming in previewing (reading before you read), reviewing (reading
after you read), determining the main idea from a long selection you don't
wish to read, or when trying to find source material for a research paper.
Use scanning in research to find particular facts, to study fact-heavy topics,
and to answer questions requiring factual support.
Intensive Reading
It is reading
where testing
where testing , evaluating
, evaluating and increasing
and increasing knowledge is the primary focus.
Ø Extensive reading is like that. It’s reading for fun. And it’s doing it as often as possible.
Ø Fluency and total comprehension aren’t necessary for extensive reading.. Most of the time, an
unfamiliar word can be deciphered by the surrounding text.
Ø It’s not vital to understand every single word in order to get the general idea of a particular passage.
Ø The idea behind extensive reading is that increased introduction leads to stronger
language skills.
