SKIMMING &
SCANNING

Skimming and scanning are reading techniques that

use rapid eye movement and keywords to move
quickly through text for slightly different purposes.

Skimming is reading rapidly in order to get a

general overview of the material.

Scanning is reading rapidly in order to find specific

facts.

SKIMMING example
ž Skimming often refers to the way in
which one reads at a faster rate to
gain the general idea about the
text without paying heed to the
intentional and detailed meaning
of the text. For Example - When
one reads the text only in order to
understand the thesis statement,
in one or two lines.
SCANNING example
ž For example, when we are searching
for a telephone number in a
directory, we scan the page for the
name of the specific person we are
looking for.
While skimming tells you what general information is within a section,
scanning helps you locate a particular fact.
Use skimming in previewing (reading before you read), reviewing (reading
after you read), determining the main idea from a long selection you don't
wish to read, or when trying to find source material for a research paper.
Use scanning in research to find particular facts, to study fact-heavy topics,
and to answer questions requiring factual support.

intensive reading, there’s an emphasis on deconstructing sentences to understand
grammar and syntax rules as well as to extricate the details of the topic.

It can also involve reading comprehension testing, such as finding answers to

specific questions.

Extensive
Reading

Ø Extensive reading is like that. It’s reading for fun. And it’s doing it as often as possible.

Ø Fluency and total comprehension aren’t necessary for extensive reading.. Most of the time, an
unfamiliar word can be deciphered by the surrounding text.

Ø It’s not vital to understand every single word in order to get the general idea of a particular passage.

Ø The idea behind extensive reading is that increased introduction leads to stronger
language skills.

Ø Seeing the structure, idioms and cadence (rhythm) of a language leads to

familiarity, which leads to reading competence.

Ø Possible examples of extensive reading material are magazines
