Proper Disposal Practices”

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students with 85% accuracy rate will be able to:
A. classify the different types of waste management;
B. display appreciation of environmental protection by expressing the importance
of knowing proper waste management; and
C. execute segregation of garbage in its corresponding type of waste.

II. LEARNING COMPETENCIES:

H6CMHIIe-5 1. Classifies different types of wastes
H6CMHIIf-6 2. Describes proper ways of waste disposal

III. LEARNING MATERIALS

Lesson: HEALTH: Protecting the Environment through Proper Disposal Practices
Resources: Cartolina, Charts, Pictures, etc.
References: MAPEH BOOK, Web links

IV. LEARNING EXPERIENCES:

*Activity – “Place Me Right!”

Instruction: The teacher will give each student a strip of paper with a
corresponding name of waste on it. The teacher will then ask the students to place
their strip of paper with the name of waste on it according to its type of waste. The
students can choose among the four pictures of garbage bins placed on the board
(biodegradable, non-biodegradable, reusable, and hazardous waste).

After the activity, the teacher will ask the students through the following questions:
1. Based on the activity you did a while ago, what have you observed?
2. Why should you throw your garbage properly?
3. How can you manage your waste at home, in school, and in the community?

*Analysis

Protecting the Environment through Proper Disposal Practices

Proper Waste Management- is being able to assess waste and efficiently reduce,
recycle, store, and dispose of it properly.

Waste Reduction- is anything that reduces waste by using less material in the
first place.

Examples:
 Reusing- Reusing different materials can also reduce waste since you are
using an item whether for its original purpose or fulfilling it with another
function.

Plastic Bottles to store dry foods Paper for cleaning window

 Selling/Donating/Exchanging

Materials- Donating supplies, furniture, clothing, accessories, and other

belongings when they are not needed anymore. Selling things with value
that are not needed anymore by the owner. Taking trivial objects that are
rarely used and swapping them with items that are more useful to you,
instead of buying new things.

Waste Storage- may range from pits or dugouts, storage bins, or actual
storage facilities or structures intended to keep waste separately according to
their classification.

Examples:

 Segregation of Wastes- Waste bins are labeled as biodegradable, non-

biodegradable, recyclable, and hazardous wastes. Garbage should be
segregated for easier collection.
Biodegradable - refers to the ability of things to get disintegrated
(decomposed) by the action of micro-organisms such as bacteria or fungi
Non-Biodegradable- A material
Banana Peel
that can be defined as a kindNewspaper
Left-over Foods Rotten Fruit
of substance
which cannot be broken down by natural organisms and acts as a source
of pollution.

Broken Glass Chip Bags Styrofoam Containers Aluminum Foil

Reusable- It is the act of taking old items that you might consider throwing
away and finding a new use for them.

Plastic Bottles Tin Cans Empty Containers Used Clothes

Hazardous- It is a waste with properties that make it dangerous or capable

of having a harmful effect on human health or the environment.

Pesticides Used Dextrose Used Syringes Batteries

 Use of Appropriate Storage Containers- Recyclable materials may be

stored in dry containers. A tight-fitting lids trap in bad odors and prevent
liquid spills and by using heavy duty containers it can store large masses of
garbage due to its durability and large storage.

Waste Disposal- proper waste disposal does not simply mean throwing away
trash. It involves other procedures such as collection, transport, and treatment
of waste.

Examples:

 Composting- It may include some practices like land filling and incineration.
It is also a very inexpensive method of waste disposal. It is very convenient
and does not require too much mechanical structure and facilities.

 Landfill- A landfill is an engineered pit, in which layers of solid waste are

filled, compacted and covered for final disposal. They reduce the amount of
waste that makes it into the environment, help to prevent disease
transmission, and keep communities clean.
 Incineration Facility - is a waste treatment process that involves the
combustion of substances contained in waste materials. Incineration serves
in waste management as a way to treat waste through controlled burning.

 Recycling- The main purpose of recycling is to provide a livable

environment for the future by decreasing sources of pollution and saving
material sources.

 Energy Recovery- Instead of dumping or burning non-recyclable materials,

the waste is converted into renewable energy sources.

Example:

Biomass- organic materials like scrap lumber, forest debris,

crops, and manure, can be used as fuel to create electricity or other forms
of power.

*Abstraction
Instruction: The teacher will give 10 scenarios about people and their ways in
disposing their wastes. The teacher will then ask the students to do thumbs up if
the situation is PROPER and do thumbs down if the situation is IMPROPER.

SITUATION PROPER IMPROPER

1. Kris burns plastic packaging to manage waste problems.
2. Mommy Divine converts kitchen wastes like fruit and
vegetable peelings into compost.
3. Stacey segregates biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and
recyclable waste at home.
4. Tom always picked garbage that are scattering in the
community and dispose in proper trash bins.
5. Arturo disposes dead animals in the canal or other bodies of
water.
6. Tina labels the garbage cans properly in school for the
children to practice correct disposal of waste.
7. Sam recycles plastic products into art projects to minimize
the wastes.
8. Dave supports the Clean and Green Program of the
community to maintain the cleanliness of the place.
9. Dessa throws empty bottles of chemical sprays in the
vacant lots.
10. Ben sells scraps in junk shops to reduce waste.

After the activity, the teacher will ask the students through the following questions:
 Why is it important to know different ways of proper waste management?
 What will be the bad effect of not following the proper waste management?
 Can you help on protecting our environment? How?

*Application

“Recycle Me!”
Instruction: Using your 1.5 liter of plastic bottle, create a flower vase. You can
use any other materials or recyclable materials to make your flower vase look
more beautiful and appealing. Your output will be a total of 25 points and will be
graded according to the following rubrics:

Effective use of recycled/reused materials 10 points

Creativity 10 points
Visual Impact 5 points
Total: 25 points

List of materials needed for the Flower Vase:

 1.5 liter of plastic bottle  Small beads (for decoration)
 Scissors  Colored Papers (optional)
 Glue  Newspapers (optional)
 Yarn

V. LEARNING ASSESSMENT
Instructions: The teacher will instruct the students to get their MAPEH 6 Book and turn
it to page 392 for Test A and Test B. This will serve as a 10-item quiz for the students.
The teacher will ask the students to have their answers on their MAPEH notebook.
The teacher will collect the notebooks after the assessment.
Quiz Items:
Test A

Instruction: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is not. Answer
the following items in your notebook.
1. We can reduce waste by reusing and recycling unwanted
resources.
2. Bottles, cans, and paper are biodegradable materials.
3. Hazardous materials may be disposed by throwing into a dug out
or compost pit.
4. Batteries and other electronic components must be collected and
brought into special facilities for disposal.
5. Paperless offices use digital documents instead of paper memos
and letters.

Test B

Instruction: At home and in school, how can you contribute to efforts intended to
protect the environment through proper waste disposal and management? List
down 5 ways in your notebook.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

VI. ASSIGNMENT.

Instruction: Based from what you have learned in the discussion, make a slogan with 5
to 8 words only pertaining to proper waste disposal and management. Have your slogan
in a landscape format using a clean oslo or bond paper. You can use your coloring
materials to color the words in your slogan. (20 points)
