To what extent does classroom-based classroom-based curriculum

incorporate with continuing professional development of teachers?

Lesson 6: Curriculum
1. In order for classroom-based curriculum to be effective and schools to be successful,
teachers must be involved in the continuing professional development process. CPD is
a planned, continuous and lifelong process whereby teachers try to develop their
personal and professional qualities, and to improve their knowledge, skills and practice,
leading to their empowerment, the improvement of their agency and the development of
their organisation and their pupils. If another party has already developed the
curriculum, the teachers have to make an effort to know and understand it.

2. The goal of a successful educational program and thus effective classroom-based

curriculum should be to meet the needs and current demands of the culture, the
society, and the expectations of the population being served. Therefore, classroom-
based curriculum and the continuing professional development of teachers should
move together. Classroom-based curriculum can be challenging, therefore the
involvement of all teachers are important.

3. The most important person in the curriculum implementation process is the teacher.
With their knowledge, experiences and competencies, teachers are central to any
classroom-based curriculum effort. Better teachers support better learning because
they are most knowledgeable about the practice of teaching and are responsible for
introducing the curriculum in the classroom. Therefore, continuing professional
development of teachers is very important.

4. Classroom-based curriculum incorporates with continuing professional development of

teachers since the teacher's responsibilities are to implement the curriculum to meet
student needs. Continuing professional development (CPD) may include a wide range
of activity from short courses to higher degrees. While there is no legal requirement for
academic staff in higher education to undertake professional development courses, in
practice higher education institutions (HEIs) do provide CPD opportunities and often
have a structured framework for the development of their staff.

5. Continuing professional development keeps teachers up-to-date on new research on

how children learn, emerging technology tools for the classroom, new curriculum
resources, and more. Better teachers support better learning because they are most
knowledgeable about the practice of teaching and are responsible for introducing
the curriculum in the classroom. For example, teacher's opinions and ideas should
be incorporated into the curriculum for development.

6. Since continuing professional development of teachers is as an important factor

contributing to the success of classroom-based curriculum and implementation, we
should think about what extent teacher education programs are needed for prospective
teachers to study classroom-based curriculum.
7. Because teachers have to be involved in classroom-based curriculum, the teacher
should be provided with appropriate knowledge and skills that help them to effectively
contribute in classroom-based curriculum operation. This means teachers should have
improvement and increasing in many points of them, such as experience and
autonomy. Thus, teachers play an integral part in the process of developing the
curriculum; then students’ outcomes.
