The West Coast iswhere it all really started. Whether you point at Nolani Bushnell and the company tie founded ten years ago in Silicon Valley (Atari), oF look all of the way back to the origins of the pinball industry—to 1929 when Harry Willams started a route in Los Angeles County—Californiaand the West Coastcantake credit as the birthplace of coin-op video games. And it didn’t stop at the beginning; there’s still alot of activity out there. in the offices and factories of Sega, Atari, Nintendo, and others. The same people that brought us Zaxxon, Turbo, and Frogger have recently, released Pengo, Sub-Roe 3, Tac-Sean, Buck Rogers, Monster Bash, and Super Zaxxon. Though they had not been officially released yet, we were able to find the latter four gemes ata suburban San Diego shoppingmallarcade called The Yellow Brick Road. on Pengo (covered in detait (on page 46) is based on a. rotund penguin batting with animatedsno-bees in anice block maze. Sub-Roc 3D uses. stereoscopic 3D effect that is more iritating than entertaining, while Tac-Scanis amultiple-ship space game done with color actors (Ike Tempest) Buck Rogers won the JoyStik AMOA Beauty Pageant (page 6) because ofits flashy graphics.
