Dear President Kising:
SUBJECT: PETITION TO RESCHEDULE EXAMINATION TO NEXT WEEK.
| write in response to the students’ petition, dated 23" May 2023, which you delivered
yesterday. The main issue of the Petition was to reschedule Semester One Examinations to
next week,
Given the need to make an urgent decision on the petition, the Senate held a Special Meeting
on 23" May 2023 at 1.30 pm to consider the petition. The meeting resolved that,
1. The University core business in teaching and learning must continue without any further
disruptions. The University has the responsibility to perform its teaching and learning
functions and protect the rights of students that have come to undertake studies in their
academic programs;
2. The matter that is being pursued by students is of national importance, but lies outside of
the University's mandated role. The matter must therefore be expediently resolved
amicably between the student body and the national government;
3. In recognition of the importance of the matter nationally, the Senate agreed to reschedule
semester one examinations to recommence on 29" May and ending on 7" June 2023 on
the following conditions, that:
a. No further extension of semester one examinations will be considered;
b. Resolve the issue with the national government within this week following proper
protocols and without disrupting the University’s normal operations;
c. Ceased the protest and obstruction to University business forthwith;
d. All students must sit their scheduled examinations starting next week Monday, 29"
May without being harassed, intimidated, threatened, or prevented by other students.e. Allstaff must conduct their scheduled examinations starting next week Monday, 29"
May and must not be harassed, intimidated, threatened, or prevented by other
students.
f. Failure to comply with the above will result in the reconvening of the Senate meeting
to consider the following;
i. Taking necessary actions to protect the normal business of the University and
students learning,
ii, Determine the viability of semester one 2023.
iii. Where costs are incurred on the University consequent to students’ actions,
Senate will recommend to the Interim Council transfer of such costs to students
in 2024,
| pray and hope that we can all work together to get the academic program back on track again
and that no student is adversely impacted by this disruption.
