Example 3: Express the following in km using decimals.
a. 803cm b. 6km 98m
1 1
Solution: 1m = km = 0.001 km and 1 cm = km = 0.00001 km
1000 100000

a. 803cm = (803 × 0.00001) km= 0.00803 km

b. 6km 98m = 6 km + 98m = 6 km + (98 × .001) km
= (6 + 0.098) km
= 6.098 km

Example 4. Evaluate: −0.0231 + 2.5689 – 1.56 + 10.013 – 6.12

Solution: Working
Sum of the Sum of the negative
– 0.0231 + 2.5689 – 1.56 + 10.013 – 6.12 positive numbers: numbers:
2.5689 0.0231
= 2.5689 + 10.013 – (0.0231 + 1.56 + 6.12)
+10.0130 1.5600
= 12.5819 – 7.7031 12.5819 + 6.1200
7.7031
= 4.8788 (Answer)
Hence, we obtain:
12.5819
- 7.7031
4.8788
Multiplication of Decimals
Example 5: Evaluate the following:
a. 3.27 × 0.007 Working
Solution: a. 327 (In 3.27 there are 2 decimal places.)
× 7 (In 0.007 there are 3 decimal places.)
a. 3.27 × 0.007 02289 (From the right count 2 + 3 = 5 places
= 0.02289 (Answer) and place the decimal.)

b. 14.25 × 4.82
b. 1425 (In 14.25 there are 2 decimal places.)
Solution: × 482 (In 4.82 there are 2 decimal places.)
2850
b. 14.25 × 4.82 114000
= 68.6850 + 570000
= 68.685 (Answer) 686850 (From the right count 2+2=4 places
and place the decimal.)

Example 6: The dimensions of a rectangular piece of land are 234.56 metres by
𝟏
150.25 metres. A farmer plans to sow seeds of vegetables in part of the field
𝟒
and wheat in rest of the region. Find the areas of the two regions of the field.
Solution: The dimensions of the land are 234.56 metres by 150.25 metres.
Area of the land = 234.56 m × 150.25 m = 35242.64 m2
1
Area of the region where he plans to sow seeds = of 35242.64 m2= 8810.66 m2
4
Area of the region where he plans to sow wheat = (35242.64 - 8810.66) m2
= 26431.98 m2
Answer: The areas of the two regions are 8810.66 m2 and 26431.98 m2.

Division of Decimals
Example 7: Evaluate: 1.21663 ÷ 0.89
121663 89
Solution: 1.21663 ÷ 0.89 = ÷

Example 8: A 17.5 metre long rod is divided into two parts. of it is divided
𝟓

into 7 equal pieces and the rest of the part is divided into 4 equal pieces. Find
the measure of each of these pieces.
Solution: Length of the rod = 17.5m

𝟑
Length of the first part of the rod = of 17.5m = 3 × 3.5 m = 10.5m
𝟓

This 10.5m long rod is to be divided into 7 equal pieces.

So, the length of each piece = (10.5 ÷ 7) m = 1.5 m
Length of the remaining part of the rod = 17.5 m – 10.5 m = 7m
This 7 m long rod is to be divided into 4 equal pieces. Working
1.75
So, the length of each piece = (7 ÷ 4) m = 1.75 m 4 7.00

Answer: The 7 equal pieces measure 1.5 m each and
30
the remaining four equal pieces measure 1.75 m each. - 28
