Covalent Bonding
➢ Stability by sharing of electrons between adjacent atoms.
➢ CH4
➢ Helium, Neon
➢ Conversely, the closer the atoms are together (i.e., the smaller
the difference in electronegativity), the greater the degree of
covalency.
• With this model, these valence electrons are not bound to any
particular atom in the solid and are more or less free to drift
throughout the entire metal.
• The free electrons shield the positively charged ion cores from
mutually repulsive electrostatic forces, which they would
otherwise exert upon one another; consequently the metallic
bond is non-directional in character.
