WAVES, SOUND AND LIGHT
TRANSVERSE
WAVES
• A transverse wave is a
wave in which the
particles of the medium
vibrate at right angles ot
the direction of motion of
the wave. A transverse
wave is a succession of a
transverse pulse
DEFINITIONS
• Wavelength – the distance between 2 successive points in a phase
• Frequency – the number of wave pulses per second
• Period – the time taken for one complete wave pulse
• Crest – the highest point on a wave
• Trough – the lowest point on a wave
• Amplitude – The maximum displacement of a particle from the equilibrium
position
POINTS IN PHASE
• Points in phase – Two points in
phase are separated by a whole
number (multiples of complete
wavelength)
• Out of phase – when two points
are not separated by a whole
number of complete
wavelength
PERIOD AND FREQUENCY

The frequency and the period are related to

each other, the period is the time taken for 1
crest to pass, then the number of crests
passing the point in 1 second is 1/ T
Hence
F=1
T
WAVE SPEED
Wave speed is defined as the distance travelled by a point on a wave per unit
time
EXAMPLE 1 OF WAVE SPEED
EXAMPLE 2 OF WAVE SPEED
A stone bobs up and down on a pool, this occurs ever second. The ripples formed
has a wavelength of 20cm, if the stone is 2m from the edge of the pool, how long
does it take the ripple passing the stone to reach the edge
LONGITUDINAL WAVES
- A longitudinal wave is a wave in
which the particles of the medium
vibrate PARALELL to the direction of
motion of the wave
- There is a forward and backward
type of hand motion – Imagine
pressing the nozzle of a hand
sanitizer bottle or even a pen (how
does the spring move?)
A- B are in phase , the distance between them is 1 WAVELENGTH
