Total monthly insurance premiums have been rounded down to the nearest £

(a) Calculate, using ungrouped data, the mean and standard deviation for the
monthly insurance premiums of male respondents.
(b) Estimate, using grouped data, the mean and standard deviation for the
monthly insurance premiums of female respondents.
(c) Comment on the results obtained in parts (a) and (b).
(d) Determine the coefficient of variation associated with the solutions obtained in
parts (a) and (b). Explain the derived coefficients of variation.

2. A tour operator has conducted an investigation into the cost (per person) of a cruise
holiday and the perceived level of happiness (measured by an index of happiness having a
maximum value of 100) associated with the cruise holiday.

A sample of 20 holidaymakers produced the following information:

Holiday Cost (£) Happiness Index Holiday Cost (£) Happiness Index
2400 90 3500 50
2500 87 1800 68
1700 62 3200 88

2000 75 3000 63
2300 90 2700 90
3000 92 3200 70

(a) Calculate, using ungrouped data, the mean and standard deviation for:

(i) the cost (per person) of a cruise holiday,

and
(ii) the perceived level of happiness.

Within its monthly newsletter to tour operators, the Guild of Tour Operators has published
the following survey information for ‘experience of a life-time’ holidays.

£2500 to under £5000 44 70 to under 90 77
£5000 to under £10000 26 90 and above 42

(b) Estimate the mean and standard deviation for:

(i) the cost (per person) of ‘experience of a life-time’ holidays,

and
(ii) the happiness index.

(c) Comment on the results obtained in parts (a) and (b).

(d) Determine and comment on the coefficient of variation associated with the
results obtained in parts (a) and (b).
