The consumer's role in society is to keep the trade alive and well.

When people buy and

sell goods, people get what they want and need while boosting the economy of the country. This
behavior can play an important role in promoting our identity as a people by consuming locally
made products instead of purchasing imported ones. This will strengthen our economy by
helping out Filipino owned businesses which will then hire more employees and put more
people to work. It isn't wrong to buy imported products, we all know that many of them are better
than ours, that is something we have to accept, but when it comes to certain items which we
know are about the same quality as that of the imports, we could probably patronize ours and
save a bit of money while doing it.

Consumer culture is commonly defined as a c u l t u r e w h e r e s o c i a l s t a t u s , v a l u e s

a n d a c ti v i ti e s a r e c e n t e r e d o n t h e consumptions of goods and services. On the other hand,
in consumer culture, large part of what you do, what you value and how you defined turns around your
consumption of material. Filipinos has a unique way in buying the goods or services in the market.
Furthermore, Shidhar Sharman gives definition to “Identity” as an umbrella term used all through the
social sciences to define person’s idea and manifestation of distinctiveness. Identity is also a basis of
significance for people. It is a progressive development occurring within the personality and has an
influential socio-cultural perspective within which it is formed. It refers to the capacity for self-reflection
and awareness of self. Identity is, thus, the entire personality of a human being in his uniqueness, with
psychological, biological and societal nature.

Filipino consumers love to buy things which are on sale and with discounts. ... In many cases,
family members, friends, and colleagues are the usual influencers to Filipino consumers. They usually
listen for the advice of people around them in choosing the brand that will suit their needs and wants.
The Filipino concept of self reflects a collectivistic perspective, as Filipinos tend to emphasize values and
traits that promote interpersonal cooperation, reciprocity, and social acceptance, rather than
individualistic values such as autonomy and uniqueness.

FAKE NEWS

CHECK THE SOURCE

If you’re reading an article on a website you’ve never heard of before, take a look at the
website’s “Contact” and “About Us” pages.  If the site is meant to be satirical, these pages will
typically have a disclaimer.

DON’T JUDGE A BOOK (OR A NEWS ARTICLE IN THIS CASE), BY IT’S COVER
Unreliable sites will often use misleading headlines to lure in readers and clicks. Before sharing a
story with an outrageous claim, keep reading – what’s the whole story? Did the author bury the
lead in efforts to make the story more attractive? Were credible and trustworthy sources used to
back up the claim made in the headline?

Typically if a story is shared on social media with a misleading headline, readers will voice their
frustration in the comments, either on the site itself or on the social media post. If you read a
headline that sounds too outrageous to be true, oftentimes that’s because it is.

TAKE A LOOK AT THE URL

Does the URL look off in some way?  This is often a tell-tale sign of a website that shares fake
news, as some fake news websites try to mimic the URL, logo, and design of legitimate news
websites, in order to trick readers.

BE WARY OF SLOPPY WRITING

If you are reading an article and the author uses five exclamation points at the end of a sentence,
it is often fake news of some sort. Also be skeptical of an abundance of spelling or grammatical
errors, or if the writer uses caps lock.

Most credible news sources have copy editors that will check for these mistakes before
publication, and will also have rules restricting writers from using features like caps lock for the
sake of professionalism.

QUOTES – OR LACK THEREOF

A sure sign of credible journalism is the presence of quotes. This adds an additional layer of
integrity, allowing readers to do some research on the individual quoted and decide if they are a
reliable source of information.

Absence of quotes is usually a sign of an opinion piece, either published as a blog post or a
column, or of fake news.

UTILIZE MEDIA LITERACY SITES

Before you share an article claiming Lil Wayne has one month to live, take a look at
what Snopes.com and Factcheck.org have to say. When fake news stories start to go viral, these
sites typically pick up what’s real and what’s not.

INSIGHT ABOUT FAKE NEWS

Ever since the advent of the internet and social media - so -called “fake news” has also been born. This is
what I think is the leading enemy of the truth that is detrimental to the morality of mankind. It is
destructive because it causes anger and strife among the people, whether personal or politically
motivated. In fact, fake news is not new. Ever since the beginning of humanity and civilization, it has
been a part of human life. Spreading false news to discredit a rival is called fake news.
