Banning Momma
Chewing for Health
and Sanitation
On March 9, 2022, Baguio City officially
banned chewing momma on public places. Many
citizens of the city considered this a good move
from the city government to promote cleanliness
and sanitation in the community. However, even
with the said ordinance, some people still chews
and spits momma everywhere.
Sto. Tomas National High School is not ex-
empted from the ordinance because it still falls un-
der the jurisdiction of the city, however, the prob-
lem on chewing and spitting momma persists since
the full face-to-face classes began in September.
It’s sad knowing that in spite of the city ordinance
which the school keeps on reiterating to students, a
few still ignores it. In fact, according to one of the
maintenance staff, momma has been the cause for
clogged drainage systems in the school. She also
said that it’s difficult to clean the stain of momma
on the comfort room tiles. As a solution, she sug-
gested that the students should not chew momma
on the school premises which has been prohibited
by the school since the first day of school. She also

Q & A with Sir Danilo P. Gayao

by: Hydrell B. Rallos & Jelyca Yuayan

We were tasked to interview our school head, Sir Danilo P. Gayao and while we were walking towards his office, we were very
nervous. But when we entered his office, he was very welcoming and even offered us a chair.
We started with: Sir, we heard that you were awarded for your 25 years in service. How do you feel? He was laughing as he
said, “Of course I’m happy. That’s something special.”
Then we proceeded to ask: What are your best memories as a principal? And he said, “Best memories? Do I have like that?” He
was very warm, and this made us comfortable because we seem to be talking to a casual friend. Then he said “well, almost everything
are best memories for me. I’ve been 25 years in service but of course not a principal for 25 years. I underwent a process.”
And so we learned that he passed the principal’s exam in 2006. But before that, he was was assigned as an administrator or
a school head in 2006 to 2007 then came to Sto. Tomas Annex in 2007 to 2008. He also went to different schools around Baguio City
such as in Lindawan Elementary School, Dona Aurora Elementary School, and Quezon Elementary School as a teacher and a teacher-in-
charge.
Then he proceeded to say that his best memories as a principal is when he sees teachers and learners working together for
the attainment of the school’s goals. At this point, we also asked his happiest moments in STNHS.
He responded with “the happiest moments are when the school achieves a lot of goals and, when the school is recognized by award giving bodies from the Division Office.”
We felt his pride as he enumerated the different awards and recognition given to the SSG and to the different clubs because of the youth formation activities they implement.
Finally, we asked him what challenges he faced as a principal. And he said that he likes challenges because he gets to face himself. He believes that when challenges come, we have
to deal with ourselves first before we can deal with others.
The interview ended with his message, “do your best and as I said a while back, the purpose why we do these things is to glorify our creator. Stay focused and have an enjoyable
school year with your school works.”
How Not to Exist
By: Mereyl Grace Taplin
I always mourn when the morning arrives remembering all the pile of pending activities and task that I must
accomplish makes me want to cry all day long. I always thought on the easiest way on how I am going to live, but
that made things even more complicated and of course hard. I learned that if I continue to fill my head with those
thoughts, I wouldn’t be living, and I might lose a head as well.
“The art of life is to know how to enjoy a little and to endure very much”- William Hazlitt. It is certain and
expected that life contains sequel of trouble.
Just like me, I’m dealing with a struggle to change for the better, to discard my soul sucking thoughts and
hobbies. One of those common thoughts is “do homework due date” which obviously leads into a big self-made
struggle. While on the hobbies, it is making that struggle even more bigger. Changing isn’t always an art of some-

The Eagle’s Nest
By Gemma Allaga (alumna contributor)

Have you ever been on a ghost hunting adventure?

Halloween is just around the bend and people in Bilis, Sto. Tomas have their eyes fixed once more on an old
and enigmatic structure called the Eagle’s Nest. It is visible from STNHS if you stand on one of the classrooms of the
Senior High School Building. You can easily spot it because the rooftop looks like a castle. People have come to call it
as Eagle’s Nest because years ago, there was a sculpture of an eagle on top of the gate. It’s no longer there but the name
stuck in the people’s mind.
The view from the rooftop of the Eagle’s Nest is breathtaking. From there you will see the wide expanse of
strawberry farm, the beautiful view of green nature and you will also see the neighboring barangay - Balacbac Cen-
tral. You might also enjoy looking at different house designs because from there you will be able to view one side of

In spite of these scary stories, people still visit the house either to check if the ghost stories are real, or they
