Sports and environment concepts and issues

The environment is everything that surrounds an organism or organisms, including both
natural and human-built elements. In the practice of sports competitions, the environment
suffers various issues including
▪ GLOBAL / ENVIRONMENTAL DISTURBANCE
▪ POLLUTION
▪ SPORTS EQUIPMENT
▪ SPORT FACILITIES
▪ SPORT EVENTS

These factors can potentially affect and harm the surroundings or our environment through
Long-term Impacts which are classified into two, the direct impacts and indirect impacts or
through Short-term Impacts.
 Long-term Impacts last long even if the cause has already been solved or ceased.
Meaning, the effect of an issue still affects the environment even if the cause of the
pollution or disturbance to the environment is already been removed or cleaned.
o Direct Impact - Direct impact refers to changes immediately as a result of the
hazard.
o Indirect Impact - Direct impact refers to changes immediately as a result of the
hazard
 Short-Term Impacts is a problem that is caused by treatment of a disease but usually
goes away after treatment ends.

Environmental Issues to Consider Before And/or After Sports Activities

• BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION
• PROTECTION OF THE ECOSYSTEM
• LAND USE AND LANDSCAPE
• POLLUTION
• RESOURCE AND WASTE MANAGEMENT
• HEALTH AND SAFETY
• NUISANCES
• SAFEGUARD OF CULTURAL HERITAGE

These issues are to consider before, during, and/or after any sports activity to keep our
environment from harm and maintain a balance and healthy environment which we will all
benefit from.
