INTRODUCTION

This chapter represents the background of the study, statement of the problem,

conceptual framework, significance of the study, scope and delimitations and definition of

terms.

Background of the study

Education is indeed imperative in the lives of people. It may be acquired from the

individual’s own ways or by formal schooling wherein the latter is the usual source of

learning of almost all. To realize this, educational programs include both curricular or

academic activities and extra-class or co-curricular activities. The extra-curricular

activities, such as those athletics-related, play a vital role in the academic performance of

students, particularly the athletes. (Austria 2019).

The main reason for this study to be conducted was due to the said downswing of

academic performance upon student athletes of Inapoy National High School due to issues

such as learning difficulties due to tiredness after sports participation and lack of time for

school due to sports attendance.

Thus, this research was conducted prior to determining the percentage regarding the

academic performance of student athletes in Inapoy National High School.

REVIEWED RELATED LIRTERATURE

The following are the reviewed related literature of this study The Academic

Performance of Student Athlete of Inapoy National High School. These studies are current

and up to date. All these studies pertain to student-athletes and their academic

performance.

Student Athletes vs. Athlete-Student: The academic success, campus

involvement, and future goals of Division 1 student athletes who were university

bound compared to those who would have not attended a university had they not

been an athlete.

B. L. Vogel, J. Kress, D. R. Jeske (2021) concluded in the study that student

athletes who identify as athletes first and students second think less about academics, have

lower GPAs, and are less willing to sacrifice on athletics participation for academics. The

researchers examined several academic factors including GPA, participation in intensive

academic experiences, class participation and preparation, perception of academic

experience, importance of graduation, major selection, and participation in extracurricular

activities, future goals, and identification as an athlete or student.

According to R. Bamford (2020) that like all things, there are both positive and

negative impacts on well-being prevalent among student athletes. With good academic

standings, students feel more confident in themselves and their abilities as students and

managing their responsibilities he concluded. But the athletes who are struggling the most

don’t want to reach out for help. Everyone needs help, especially the student athletes.

The Level of Sports Participation and Academic Success among Malaysian Student

Athletes

J. Jakiwa, S. A. Atan, M. S. Azli, S. Rustam, N. Hamzah, A. A. Zainuddin (2022)

concluded in the study titled “The Level of Sports Participation and Academic Success

among Malaysian Student Athletes” that regardless of student athlete’ levels of sports

participation, no difference detected in their academic success. The findings from their

study showed that time constraints and physical/emotional strain were significant internal

challenges affecting the academic performance of student athletes.

Synthesis
Among the four given related studies, the last one was the closest to the study we

are conducting. As the respondents of this study were divided into two sexes (Male and

Female), our respondents are all Male Student Athletes who only participated in the Junior

SK League 2022. We will ask permission from our research adviser and print out permit

letters for direct gathering of data. So apparently, the study lead by J. Jakiwa became the

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter contains the summary of findings, conclusion, and recommendations

upon this research.

Summary of Findings

The main objective of this study is to gather the average grade of student athletes to

obtain the percentage of their academic performance if they are less performing or well

performing.

Research Question 1: What is the average grade of student athletes of Inapoy National

High School?

As presented in Table 1, there are 4 respondents having the average grade of 79, and

the remaining respondents have the average grade of 83 to 93. And the overall total

average grade was 81, as presented on the same table.

Research Question 2: What is the percentage of student athletes when grouped according to

their academic performance?

As shown on Table 2, there are 4 or 10.81% of the student athletes are less

performing with the average grade of 80 and below. The remaining 33 or 89.19% of the

student athletes are well performing with the average grade of 81 and above. Thus,

revealing that most of the student athletes are well performing.

Conclusion

The results presented on Table 1 shows that out of 37 respondents there are 4

student athletes having the average grade of 79 and the remaining 33 have the average

grade of 83 to 93. Table 2 presented that there are also 4 or 10.81% are less performing

with the average grade of 80 and below and the 33 or 89.19% are well performing with the

average grade of 81 and above. The results presented on both tables reveals that most

student athletes of Inapoy National High School are well performing. This suggests that the

only problem for the failure of the 4 respondents was due to failure upon complying their

academic performance to their teachers. Thus, researchers suggests recommendations as
