The DO'S and DON’TS of CPR

Being faced with an emergency situation can be overwhelming, even for someone with First aid training. It's always stressful
being in a situation where someone's life is on the line. One of the key areas of first aid is Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
(CPR). It is an emergency procedure used to kick-start a person's heart that stops beating.

Here are CPR tips on what TO do and what NOT to do.

DO ASK FOR THE CASUALTY'S PERMISSION. If the victim is conscious, the first responder must receive expressed consent
before approaching the victim.

DO ROLL THE UNCONSCIOUS CASUALTY IN THE RECOVERY POSITION unless there is a suspected spine or neck injury.

DO CALL EMERGENCY SERVICES call the emergency hotline immediately before administering CPR.

DO NOT DELAY THE PERFORMANCE OF CPR. Every delay in the performance of CPR can mean devastation loss in the brain
and overall body function.

DO NOT PERFORM RESCUE BREATHING (IF UNTRAINED) if the first responder is untrained in CPR or is worried about giving
rescue breathes, it is best to the hands-only CPR.

DO NOT PAUSE EXLECTIVELY IN BETWEEN COMPRESSIONS.

DO NOT ADMINISTER EXCESSIVE VENTILATION. Too much force applied in a rescue breath can cause a blockage within the
person's airway.

CPR is a skill that everyone can learn. You don't need to be a health professional to do it. If you know CPR, you
might save the life of a family member, a friend, or someone’s life.
