As the future of our society, young people are likely to take on leadership roles in the future since they are
more educated, innovative, and are more open-minded than the older generation. Young leaders are not
only result-driven, but are also not afraid to tackle challenges and develop ambitious goals.
(Vox-pop with low show signature tune) – Lewis and Nalotwesha (with election B-Rolls)
As we approach youthful leadership and see how it brings meaning to life by how a strong sense of
purpose is shared, we get a picture of how outstanding leaders tangibly demonstrate this sense of purpose
in their work, bringing meaning to what they, and others do.
(Vox
-pop with low show signature tune) – Daniel (with election B-Rolls)
We get to hear a captivating life story of a young man who was just but a regular youth hustling to make
ends meet. However, his dream of becoming a future leader is what actually gets him to one of the best
learning Institutions in Kenya, Daystar University. And as we come to the end of the show we will be
bringing in a young action-oriented and change agent with a demonstrated history of leadership,
management and environmental conservation.

Investing first in education to stay ahead of the curve has been the common norm and as a bridge to
fulfilling our dreams. But what about that young boy or girl who is so unfortunate, and cannot afford or
access higher levels of education?
“No matter where you are from, your dreams are valid. This is a famous quote from the award-winning
actress, Lupita Nyongo, which resonated with the former Daystar University Students’ Association
president, Walter Nalwa

His journey has been one of many challenges but he could not afford to give up because of one reason- he
had a dream.

Hailing from a family of four being the firstborn, Nalwa said his upbringing was tough. His mother was a
shopkeeper while his father worked as a peasant farmer. To him, going through primary and secondary
school was a miracle
Born and raised in Bungoma County, in Sango village, nobody would have thought Nalwa would one day
become a student leader at the university. Surviving on bursaries and sponsorships, his love for sports
pushed him to make sure he ended up at the university.
In 2021 through his service to the students, Daystar voted him the campus governor of social welfare and
sports. He served for one year before he was later voted in as president in 2022.  And I quote, “I once said
that I would be president and my dream came to be. I am now eyeing an MP seat,”
Apart from the services he rendered to his campus, he not only served as a mentor to his fellow students
to become better versions of themselves, but he was also as a programmer manager at Deshcare
International, a charity non-profit organization centered towards empowering the girl-child, youth and the
less fortunate.
Coming from a poor background, Nalwa has learnt to be humble and treat people as they deserve. This he
said makes work easier.

Get this, apart from eyeing an MP seat, Nalwa looks forward to working with the United Nations and the
African Union.

Voice-Over (VO) of Tracy

Alternatively, we could look at leaders who started off as young leaders in university and managed

to be political leaders in our country. Leaders such as His Excellency Honorable William Samoei

Ruto was a student activist in the University of Nairobi, Anyang’ Nyong’o was a student leader at

Makerere, Johnson Sakaja was elected the chair of Acturial Students Association at the University of

Nairobi and the likes of PLO Lumumba was elected Sonu chairman unopposed when he was

studying law at the University of Nairobi. Our young leaders are looking up to some of these leaders

as their mentors and emulate some of their actions.

Tracy: Well there you have it but before we close the show, I have a question for my co-host, Keyler do
you think leadership is born or made?

Keyler: Thank you. Well I would say it goes both ways when we look at the previous interviews we’ve
had. An individual like Nalwa I would say that’s a born leader. His passion, dream and love for football is
what drove him to ensure he ended up in university, and worked his way to finally become the
Institutions’ president. Avram on the other hand, is a made leader for his skills and leadership qualities
are among the major reasons he was in fact trusted with all those positions.

Tracy: Well that is Keyler’s take and I do think leadership can either be made or a person is born with it.

SYNOPSIS

Young leadership refers to the concept of younger individuals assuming positions of leadership within
organizations, communities, and the society as a whole. This kind of leadership is characterized by a
fresh perspective innovation and a willingness to take risks. Young leaders are often more open –minded
and adaptable to change and possess high level of energy and enthusiasm. They are also comfortable
with technology and social media which are critical tools for communication and networking in the
modern world.

However young leaders may face challenges such as lack of experience, limited resources and lack
support from older colleagues who may not be comfortable with change. They must also navigate the
delicate balance between maintaining respect from the older leaders while also pushing for new ideas
and approaches.

Despite these challenges, young leadership is essential for driving progress and innovation in various

perspectives, young leaders can make a significant impact on the world around them.

REPORT

Introduction
Leadership is the cornerstone to an organization's success, and young leaders are crucial in determining
current and future trends. This research report focused on an analysis of young leaders' difficulties and
achievements. The research has used surveys, interviews, online sources, and video recordings of
interviews with young leaders. This report will give a summary of the research project's progress in
order to explain any challenges that were encountered.

Project synopsis

The project's goal was to examine the experiences of young leaders in a variety of arenas, such as
business, politics, and community improvement. Three stages of the project were separated. The
selection of research participants took place in the first phase, while the administration of
questionnaires and conduction of interviews took place in the second phase. The final stage comprised
data analysis and the creation of a video documentary that highlighted the experiences of the young
leaders.

Research Methods:

A mixed-methods strategy was used to conduct the research, incorporating online sources,
questionnaires, and interviews. Open-ended questions were used in the interviews, which were done
face-to-face or by video conference and allowed the participants to openly share their opinions and
experiences. The participants were required to answer a series of structured questions in electronic
questionnaires that were distributed to them.

Project Progress:

The project went according to schedule, and the participant selection was finished in the first week.
With a total of 25 participants, the second week was devoted to conducting interviews and distributing
questionnaires. In the third week, the data was analyzed, and a film documentary depicting the
experiences of the young leaders was created.

Challenges Faced:

During its execution, the research encountered a number of difficulties. The difficulty in finding suitable
participants for the research was one of the main difficulties. Due to worries about their privacy and the
possible consequences of sharing their experiences, several young leaders were reluctant to participate
in the study.

The difficulty of scheduling interviews with the participants posed another issue. Finding a mutually
convenient time to conduct the interviews was difficult because the majority of the young leaders were
preoccupied with their jobs and had limited availability. This caused a delay in the data collection
procedure, which had an impact on the project's schedule as a whole.

The qualitative character of the data collected through the interviews and questionnaires made the data
analysis procedure difficult as well. The analysis was time-consuming and required the use of specialized
software to find patterns and themes in the qualitative data. The qualitative data had to be manually
transcribed.

Due to the technical expertise needed, the process of filming and producing a video also offered a
challenge. Due to the project team's lack of expertise in video production and the need for specific
software that was not easily accessible, the project ran over budget and was delayed.

Successes Achieved:

The study effort was effective in attaining its goals despite the difficulties faced. With participants
sharing their ideas and experiences, the project gave vital insights into the difficulties and successes of
youthful leadership. In order to create a video documentary portraying the experiences of the young
leaders, the information gathered from the interviews, questionnaires, and online sources was
examined to find patterns and themes.

The video documentary was well received, with many viewers commending the project team for their
efforts in showcasing the experiences of young leaders. The documentary provided a platform for the
young leaders to share their experiences and insights, inspiring others to pursue leadership roles and
make a positive impact in their communities.

Conclusion:

Despite the difficulties it faced while being carried out, the research project on young leadership was
effective in reaching its goals. The initiative gave useful information about the difficulties and successes
of young leadership.
