Workload (incl. contact hours, Total workload is 90.67 hours, which consist of 100 minutes lectures
self-study hours) per week for 14 weeks 2 hours structured activities per week, and 2
hours individual study per week, in total 16 weeks per semester,
including preparation for mid exam and final exam.

Required and recommended Students have taken Introduction to Algebraic Structures I
prerequisites for joining the course (MMM-1203) and have participated in the final
module examination of the course.
Module objectives/intended After completing this course the students should have ability
learning outcomes to:
CO.1. demonstrate knowledge on the properties of finite
group including symmetry group and its subgroups
CO.2. demonstrate knowledge on the properties of group
actions
CO.3. demonstrate knowledge on the theorem of Jordan
Holder decomposition of a finite group
CO.4. demonstrate knowledge on the Sylow Theorems
CO.5. demonstrate knowledge on the Burnside theorem and
Polya theorem and their application
Content Finite group, normalisator, sentralisator, center, coset,
Lagrange theorem, fundamental theorem of homomorphism.
Group of permutation, symmetry group, cycle, transposition,
alternating group, group action, group action and
permutation representation.
Group acting on themselves by left multiplication and
Cayley’s theorem, group acting on themselves by conjugation
and the class equation conjugation, application of group
action, Burnside and Polya Theorem, theorem of Jordan
Holder decomposition, Sylow theorem
