1 Introduction

This manual applies to the following devices:

COM-Server
Model #58611 and Model #58631, make Wiesemann & Theis GmbH

Left: Model 58611, right: 58631 (transparent housing)

CONCYCLE®-Wind-Inverters type CONCYCLE® is increasingly used in wind farms which have their own
infrastructure for communication purposes. The TCP/IP protocol via Ethernet is the most commonly used one for
cross-linkage within wind farms. In such wind farms where CONCYCLE®-Wind Inverters are used, a so called
COM-Server can be employed for communicating with the outside world instead of a modem.

The COM-Server is a protocol-converter which converts signals from a serial RS232 interface to an ethernet-
based TCP/IP-signal. The COM-Server is a gateway permitting to parcel data, which are sent via serial
interface, into TCP/IP and then to transfer them via an Ethernet interface and vice versa.

The COM-Server is connected to the serial interface of the CMW and transfers the data into the TCP/IP network
of the wind farm. Most TCP/IP-networks can be accessed via TCP/IP from outside. By means of the
“SEG_SerialToTCP/IPServer” users are able to login into the wind farm and then to approach the connected
Wind Energy Systems (WES) by their IP addresses.

In order to ensure a reliable operation, the COM-Server should be correctly installed/configured. This includes
setting up/allocating the IP address in the COM-Server and adjustment of the serial interface parameters of the
COM-Server. The relevant procedure is described in here step by step.

The servers need to be configured because their present default setting differs from the setting used by
Woodward SEG.

3 Preparing the Hardware

3.1 Assigning an IP address to the Com-Server

Each unit which can be approached via the TCP/IP must be given a distinct IP-address. This IP-address must be
assigned by the wind farm manufacturer.
A recommended segment for IP addresses in local networks is, for instance,

192.168.yyy.xxx.

The address setting-up procedure for the COM-Server is described in the following chapters. It is also possible to
change the IP address later on, irrespectively of the other settings.

For connecting the PC with the COM server the provided cable COM-Mita-CMW-6M or a suitable zero-modem
cable can be used.

3.1.1 How to start and adjust the terminal programs

The IP address is assigned via a terminal program:

e.g. hyperterminals of an Windows installation or better by the tool: „easyterm“ of W&T (http://www.wut.de).
Even if the COM server is pre-configured, the following basic adjustment is to be used for the serial connection:
9600 Baud/ 8 Datenbits / none Parität/ 1 Stopbits/ none Flow control.

The default IP-Address is 172.16.9.200.

3.1.2 Connection set-up

- Start the Hyper-Terminal

- Establish the new connection
- Enter the name (any/O.K.)

6 td_com-server-installation_rev10_07gb

COM1 properties as shown in the Screenshot.

Confirm by O.K.
Afterwards the Hyper-Terminal will be started and the connection will be established

td_com-server-installation_rev10_07gb 7
3.1.3 Setting of the IP-address

Disconnect the supply voltage of the COM-Server for a short while.

Right after reconnecting the supply voltage the following has to be observed:
When the green status LED lights-up, enter the letter “x” swiftly at least 3 times at the terminal. There is no display
of characters until the COM-Server has sent back the prompt „IPno.+<Enter>:“ .

Enter the IP address in the standard format (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) and finish the input with <Enter>. If the input was
accepted this is acknowledged by the allocated IP address. If this is not the case, „FAIL“ is indicated and
followed by the last IP address.

If the connection is established successfully, this entry can be seen in the task bar. Should the Flow control:
“none” does not work, the corresponding setting has to be changed over to “hardware”.

After the assignment of the new IP-Adress the hyperterminal program could be left.

8 td_com-server-installation_rev10_07gb
3.1.4 Checking of the IP address allocated to the COM-Server.

Calling of a DOS-Box/promt (Win98) or of a Command line (Win2000)

3.1.4.1 Checking of the IP address of the PC

3.1.4.1.1 Checking the IP-address on a Windows 98 - System

Calling of “winipcfg” and selection of the Ethernet card:

Reading of the IP address (here 172.16.3.105):

td_com-server-installation_rev10_07gb 9
3.1.4.1.2 Checking the IP-address on a Windows 2000 System

Call up a Command line.

Calling of „ipconfig“ and selection of the Ethernet card:

Reading of the IP address (here 172.16.4.57)

10 td_com-server-installation_rev10_07gb
3.1.4.2 Notification of the COM-Server IP-address

Because normally unfamiliar IP addresses, that is not called the network associated IP address, are sent to a
gateway by the PC, the “unfamiliar” address has to be notified to the PC as an exception by command „route“
in the DOS-Box.

route add <ip address of COM-Server> mask 255.255.255.255 <ip address of PC>

Here:

route add 192.168.0.10 mask 255.255.255.255 172.16.2.119

3.1.4.3 Test with the ping command

Try to “ping” the COM-Server in the DOS box.
Input:
ping <ip address of COM-Server>

In this example:
ping 192.168.0.10

The ping command gives back a response time of several [ms] if the connection can be established. Otherwise a
timeout occurs.

td_com-server-installation_rev10_07gb 11
3.2 Parameter assignment for the serial interface

All further COM-Server adjustments are to be carried out by the internet protocol „Telnet“.

3.2.1 Start of the Telnet configuration

For configuration of the COM-Server the network protocol Telnet is used. Telnet allows to access the COM
Server through a plain terminal emulation. The COM Server is allocated a valid IP address in that network and
by this the server can be addressed (see chapter „Assignment Of The IP Address“). The configuration can virtually
be carried out from any computer linked to a network and with TCP/IP-Stack. The Program telnet.exe is part of
the standard delivery scope of Windows 9x/NT/2000.

3.2.1.1 Start of Telnet in WIN98

When using this version call “Run” in the start menu and click OPEN to enter “telnet”, then click O.K.
Thereafter enter the IP address of the COM-Server as hostname in submenu “Network System….” of menu
“Connection” and enter port number “1111” as connection.

Please Note: The corresponding image of a German Windows installation.

After clicking “Connect” a terminal-like Telnet window opens.

12 td_com-server-installation_rev10_07gb
3.2.1.2 Start of Telnet in WIN2000

When using this version open a Command line.

By using the following parameters call the Telnet client for selecting the configuration menu:

TELNET <IP-Address> 1111

Where <IP-Address> is the IP address of the COM Server.

3.2.1.3 Adjustment of the serial interface

Aided by a simple menu, presented by the COM Server in the Telnet window, the serial interface of the COM
Server (the UART) is configured as follows:

- 19200 baud
- none parity
- 8 data bit
- 1 stop bit
- none handshake.

And additionally for model #58631

- FiFos off

These attitudes are to be kept absolutely, since otherwise the Login does not function.

td_com-server-installation_rev10_07gb 13
The menu entries necessary for model #58631 are shown on the following Screen-Shoots

14 td_com-server-installation_rev10_07gb
For checking or correction of the settings the following options could be used – shown in the following screen
Shots for the Model #58631.

td_com-server-installation_rev10_07gb 15
If all the settings are done, they have to be saved as shown in the following screenshot.

16 td_com-server-installation_rev10_07gb
4 Hardware Unit - Installation

For installing into the equipment the COM Server is to be placed on a top hat rail near the CMW.

4.1 Power supply

Connection to 24V-AC or DC; any polarity

Connection by using the provided Phönix terminal at the bottom side of the terminal.

4.2 Connection of the COM Server to the serial interface of the CMW

The serial interface of the COM Server (9-pole D-Sub, named „Serial Port“) is to be connected to the serial
interface of the CMWs (9-pole D-Sub, named „RS232“) by using the cable provided.

The cable provided is of Woodward SEG type „COM-MITA-CMW-6M“.

4.3 Connection of the COM Server to Ethernet

Ethernet-Hub or switch to be connected via 1:1 cable to the „Network“ RJ45 socket.
Maximum length of cable = 100m

td_com-server-installation_rev10_07gb 17
5 Integration Test

When the connection has been completed correctly and the Hub/Switch is ready to operate, the red Error-LED
does not flash.

For the test purpose it is sufficient to establish a connection between a PC with Woodward SEG Tools (customer
tool or master tool) and TCP/IP Socket Server and the CSC.

The integration can be considered successful when the connection to the CSC via the COM Server is possible.
