Ananuru
Express
By Alison Brooks
he world of Ananuru is barren. ks surface consists of
‘mountains surrounded by “oceans” dust. Themoun-
‘tains have agrandour, however, while the dustoceans
are spectacular, restless and dangerous. Under the
Tight weather conditions, they produce beautiful ight
tflacts known as “dustbowls.” The scenery led an
‘onterprising tourism operator to view Ananuru as &
base for luxury holidays, at a suitably inflated price.
Thus was born the Ananuru Express. The tran is, as one might
‘expect, highly luxurious, designed to minimize the risks of found
ingin a duststorm, and indeed any othor dangers tots passenger
‘who are the very rich.
‘The Expressrunson a monorail suspended above the dust seas.
Beth train and monorail are protected trom the dust by forcetields.
ft was decided that a monorail, the structure of which contained
various sensor units, would enable the Expross to be found quickly

INVOLVING THE PCS
Ht the PCs are members of the Rebellion, they can simply be
‘assigned this mission, perhaps as a chance to relax after several
hard-fighting scenarios.
the PCs are not Rebots, they might be employed by another
interested party to undertake tho mission; they might stumble upon
clues pointing in this direction; or they might be paid by a customer
in tickets forthe Ananuru Express, where they will stumble upon the
plot without benefit af any prior knowledge. i they are employed by
‘an NPC, the GM will have to decide the emplayer’s motives. The
‘employer might be a villain intant on getting the secret ‘or his own
use, someone of Rebel sympathies hoping to deprive the bad guys
cof the secret, or simply someone who is curious as to what's going
fon, but who does nct wish 10 risk identtication by using normal
‘employees.
BRIEFING
Hakon eVil, the owner ofthe Ananuru Express, has obtained
a datatape from an Imperial research project. This project was
destroyed under mysterious circumstances, and its beloved that
‘most ofthe scientists involved have defacted tothe Rebel Aliance
Hakon has decided to auction this datatape, The auction is to take
place on the next trip ofthe Ananuru Express.

researchers were screened for Rebel sympathies, yet were 80

Star WarsARRIVAL
‘Ananuru Cty consists of aspaceport and support facilis forthe
Express. The spaceportis protected by a force-dome. The cost of
Parking ships at the spaceport is exhorbitant. PCs could park
‘ouside the force-dome, but they would risk dust damage to their
vessel
Imperial customs does not examine the ship, but closely quos-
tions each of the PCs as to ther background and reason for visiting
the planet. The ofcers are under orders to spot suspicious charac-
{es, but ncttachallange them. PCs may attemptto smoaththeirway

the customs examination on Ananuru is usually extremly lax.
From the spaceport, passengers for the Expresscan walk along
4 short parade of shops to the Express station. Luggage for the
Expressis normally taken separately from passengers (and checked
for weapons before being placed in the passengers’ suites), al-
though the PCs may carry their baggage themselves f they don't
‘mind attracting attention. The shops are extremely pricey, whether
selling toiletries or high-fashion ballgowns. There is also a range.
souvenirs, ranging from holos of the dustbowl to models of the
Exprassin precious metals and stones.
(Once they leave the spacepor, the PCs and other passengers,
are kept under discreet observation by the security staff of the
Express company. ha PCs behave suspiciously, a member ofthe
security staf will poltoly ask them to explain themselves; if necas-
‘sary, they will be escorted to Hakon's office to explain why they
‘should not be ejected from the planet.
Tha PCs may attempt to pin the Express as employees rather
than as passengers. Employees are carefully screened for assas-
sins, spies and other undesirables. Would-be employees simply
{umning up will be unlikely to be considered suitabie,
At tho entrance to the Express station, various discreet survel
lance devices check the PCs and their luggage itis stillwith them.
PCs aro reminded that they will not need any weapons on-board,
and that weapons should be deposited in the weapons store in the
contort the vehicle. i they retuse, measures willbe taken against
them—cleaning stat! will remove cached weapons, and i the PCs
insist on carrying the weapons, they willbe asked politely to desist
and, f necessary, politely shown af the Express. Violence by the
PCs will get them thrown off.
SCHEDULE
There are several formal events, from which PC (or NPG)
absence would cause comment, but for most othe time, they are
{roe to amuse themselves,
‘Thareis aformaldinnor each night, with cocktals beforehand. On
the second day, the dinner is followed by a dance in the forward
‘observation lounge, which everyone will be expected to attend,
‘Cutures rolls willbe at a premium here, and the PCs should feel
uncomfortable if they don't know which utensil to use for eating
‘some imported delicacy, ori they tread on a partners toes.
Tho PCs will be separated at dinner, allowing them to tak to
NPCs. The GM should give the PCs a chance to assess the other
passengers, and ba assessed by them, in the form of smal talk
(none of the passengers, nor Hakon, will tk opanly about the
auction).
‘The Express slides smoothly away from the station. During the
days of the tip, the scenery will be a continual presence, An
intercom informs passengers whenever a particularly spectacular

sunset, mountains rising trom the dust sea ora view ofthe dust sea

‘TROUBLE
COntthe third day out, the Express attacked. This is an attempt

by Hakon to evaluate the passengers. Hehiredthese thugs, through
an intermediary, totry to hold the Express up. He ensured that they
were able to get through the usual security on-planet. Express
securty is quite good, but it takes the unarmed staff some time to
reach the weapons storage and deploy themselves.
‘The attacks straightforward. The PCs aren one ofthe obsorva
tion lounges when they see a dust-skimmer coming toward the
Express. W attempts to land on the root and blast ts way in, A third
‘skimmer comas from the side and ducks beneath the Express. Tho
attackers attempt to disable the Express's motors.
The skimmers are armored (4D hull, speed 30), but their heat,
Cissipators are vulnerable. These are at the rear ofthe skimmer. I
requires a Moderate Technology roll know of them and a Vary
Dificul blaster shotto hit. The dssipatorhas 2D Strangth; disabling
itcuts the available power, and the skimmer is forced to limp away.
‘The observation lounges have skeet blasters, to knock down
target drones for the passengers’ amusement (Damage 20). They
are fixed in place and cannot be turned inside the vehicle, Othor-
wise, the PCs wil have te obtain weapons trom storage or from the
thugs, or braw! with them.
ifthe thugs got that far, the thugs will attempt to grab passengers.
toransom them. I the thugs attempt to flee, the PCs can pursue in
the Express's escape skimmers, These are not armed, but they are
fast (Speed 3D) and durabie (3D+1 hull). Shooting rom tham could
be an interesting rick, as it is not possible to opan the windows,
any ofthe thugs are taken prisoner, Hakon has them taken “for
interrogation” and removed rom the Expressby a recovery skimmer
{rom the port. Hakon is apologetic about “his regrettable lapse of
security” and assuros overyone that will not be allowed to happen
again.
