FLAMENCO: THE
BELLRINGERS
WHAT WERE THE
BELLRINGERS ABOUT?
They came from some religious cantables that were
celebrated in the Rosario de la Aurora since the 17th century
where they were performed on the streets in some regions of
Andalusia. Some variations were made on Christmas, for
example in Bormujos (Seville), accompanied by guitars and
percussions.

ORIGIN
We owe the flamenco version to the Jerez-born
'cantaor' (a specific type of folksinger from
Andalusia) Manuel Torre, who in 1929 recorded with
the guitarist Miguel Borrull Jr. with the classic lyrics
of ‘A la puerta de un rico avariento’, seasoned with
some melodic cadences that could remind us of the
farruco

THE MOST FAMOUS VERSION


A year later, La Niña de la Puebla recorded this cante again in a
version more accessible to the general public, obtaining ginormous
success.
The lyrics usually consist of a religious theme, however, the one that
made La Niña de la Puebla famous isn't.. Nowadays, it has remained
as a cante for Christmas, which along with the Christmas carols and
zambombas sets the festivities
