1.3 The Body of the Other as the First Cultural Object

I n e a c h c i v i l i z a t i o n , t h e r e is a c o m m o n m o d e o f u s a g e f o r e a c h u t e n s i l

O n e m a y o b je c t th a t w h a t M e r le a u - P o n ty d e s c r ib e s is o n ly a p a r tic u la r ly
s u c c e s s f u l c a s e o f h u m a n d i a l o g u e . I n e v e r y d a y r e a l i t y , c o m m u n i c a t i o n is
n e v e r p e r f e c t a n d t h e r e is a lw a y s p o s s ib ility o f m is u n d e r s ta n d in g . W h e n I a m

f o r M e r le a u - P o n ty , th e c o n s titu tio n o f th e O th e r d o e s n o t s o lv e b y i t s e l f th e
e n tire p r o b le m o f th e c o n s titu tio n o f th e c u ltu ra l w o rld . B y w ay o f h is
