It's a little like cooking without salt. The food i the food, and at it's base is amazing - but salt brings everything out and gives it more punch. ‘That said if you're going to do it on your own, PRACTICE BEFORE YOUR, SESSION! And if you'd ike the punch makeup brings without the hassle, just ask} I can arrange a makeup artist for you. If you'd like to try on your own - here is a good tutorial from Regan Rabanal, senior artist at MAC Cosmetics: ‘We tend to use makeup in photography because In real life, there's nothing targeting and Bouncing light off of your face, washing out your features. Plus, the human eye sees differently than the lens of a camera (obvs), which is why you look. very different in the mirror versus in a picture. The basic fixes will help to deal with shiny or uneven skin tone, tired eyes, and unpronounced features in general. First up: foundation, concealer, and translucent powder. Mattifying, fullcoverage base makeup will help your skin to [ook smooth and even, plus ¢ ¢ will combat shininess. Using a makeup brush will help to blend the product into a natural- = looking finish. Foundation: With a foundation brush, blend foundation evenly all over clean, moisturized skin. Plan ahead and work in a good moisturizing routine a few weeks ahead of time if you can, Your skin will thank you. Concealer: “Apply your foundation first and then conceal the problem areas that still stand out, Usually, the best areas to conceal are around your nostrils, the shallow area underneath your eye and into any laugh lines. Use a minimal amount of concealer and blend well," Rabanal says. Translucent Powder: ‘Lightly sweep powder over the center of the forehead, the center of the nose, and your chin. Apply it as a final step, so you can tell where you really need it. It will remove shine,” he says. Only eyes and lips should shine, Pro tip: carry powder throughout the day for touch up work,to remove shine, ‘The flash of a camera will Bounce off of makeup, so it's important that your blending of concealer is harmonious with your foundation," Rabanal says, For the most seamless blending, use a concealer brush or a makeup blender. OY NOE Next, eyebrows. ~~ rsp ad eve av teh ay A flier Gro loa mcakge pou fea bk, oeger wad 2 “fresher, but be careful not to overdo it," he says "Fill the brow in a natural way! The brow should have dimension and not look.too sharp or &- t00 opaque for ev Rabanal says. —— Use an eyebrow pencil to create hair-like strokes within the brow as you fill. ‘Start from the bottom of the brow and fill it upwards so there is a gradation or ombré effect within the brow. This will look natural in both photos and real life," he says. Onto eyeshadow! ‘Using three cofors (a neutral, a darker shade, and a highlighter) will make your eyes appear brighter and larger in pictures. Start with a classic defining shape. Neutral shadow over the ld will even things out, darker shadow in the crease will make your eyes pop, and highlighter at the inner comer and on the brow Gone will brighten up the darker areas of the eye. If your eyelid is smoother without a strong crease, blend the deeper shade on the outer comer of the eye for nice dimension. Let your Gone structure be the guide. Matte works Getter than frost, which draws attention to wrinkles. Choose an eyeshadow color that's close to your skin tone and apply it to your lid. For the best application, use a fluffy eyeshadow Grush. Use a color that's a little deeper than your skin tone and blend it through your crease for definition. You can begin 6y applying it at the outer corner of your eye, sweeping inward along the crease. ‘Then, apply highlighter to the inner comer and brow Gone. ‘The biggest tip: Use your brush to lend so that you can't see where one shadow begins and the other ends. Let's dance, eyeliner. Eyeliner frames the eyes in photos (and, you Rnow, reat Gfe) "Use a skinny brush so you can apply a thin finer very close to the lashes. If you have a smoother eyelid, try applying the liner while the eye is open and sculpt your perfect shape, The closer to the lash and tighter the fine, the Getter! Start with the classic shape and experiment with adding to it to incomporate a bit of your personality,” he says. Your eyes are going to Ge the main focus of the portrait, it is worth spending extra time with them to make them right. Want to get ~fancy~? Get false eyelashes. Theyre meant to enkance your eyes and natural lashes, which is why basically every celebrity ever wears them on the red carpet. Apply mascara to top and bottom lashes 6y saturating the roots first and Grushing out to the ends of the lashes. Apply a second coat if desired, and then, it's time for false lashes! Put false lashes on after mascara so the natural lashes can be properly styled with mascara. Apply a thin coat of tacky adhesive to the lash Gand and apply to the outer corner of the eye first, working your way inward to the tear duct. Gently pinch the falve lashes into your natural lashes with your fingers. "The trick.to applying false lashes is to allow your adhesive to diy a little first before putting them directly onto your eye,” he says. And don't worry, the glue dries clear. Now it's time for some contouring magic, y'all. Higlilighter is like an IRL. filter, bronzer defines Bone structure, and blush gives the cheeks dimension in pictures. Highlighter: “Add this to the top of the cheeks, center of the nose and inner comer of the eyelids,” Rabanal says. Bronzer: Sweep bronzer over the jawline, temples, sides of the nose, and just under the cheeRbones. Blush: Use ing 6lush after your highlighter to add tone and dimension to the cheek, For photos, this blends the products together so they don't sit on top of the skin. "T love using a fan brush to apply bronzer and blush because it's a gradual application," RaGanal says Much like with eyeshadow, the most important part of using bronzer, blush, and highlighter is to blend. Last but not least, lipstick! “Im photos it's important to have a well-executed lip that's balanced, saturated, and symmetrical,’ fie says. Use a lip 6rush and press the color into the mouth. It gives you ultimate control and ‘maximum coverage. "Nude is one of the most sought-after colors in lipstick Gecause there are so many to choose from, and it isa staple shade in moder beauty. The truth is anyone can wear many shades of nude — but it's al about the application,” Rabanal says. x Now go enjoy a photo sesh, will you? However, this isn’t something that happens without preparation. Yes, this sounds like work - to get the most of your time with a photographer, it takes a little work on your part. Choose not to if you'd like, but don’t expect miracles from your photographer. Here are a few things you can do in advance to help things run smoothly: Q Q Consider the time of day. The best pictures are taken early in the morning or late in the afternoon — sunrise & sunset. If you can schedule for these times, your pictures are likely to be more dramatic. Consider the time of day. If you aren’t a morning person, don’t schedule for sunrise. (I’d say the same for the photographer, but you're paying them to deal with it) Plan ahead. The easiest way to ruin a photograph is to be stressed. If you aren't able to relax, the camera will see it. Plan ahead by getting to the location a bit early - that way if traffic doesn’t cooperate you can still arrive on time and without worry. Bring yourself along. If you have a favorite CD - bring it, music is often played during a shoot. If you have special props that are uniquely you - bring them, they can be incorporated. Get a good night’s sleep the night before. Drink plenty of fluids (helps skin texture). Brush your teeth! Hair: get it cut a week before at the latest. That way it has time to grow a bit and lay naturally. Grab a snack before your shoot. Nothing like being hungry as a distraction, Get to know your photographer. If your style doesn’t match theirs - find someone else. Photographers should turn clients down if photographers don't feel that magic connection. Especially at weddings, it is too important to get good pictures on the first try - if our personalities and styles don’t match it makes for a long day. Feel free to make suggestions. If you love the picture from the cover of the February 1976 Vanity Fair - bring it with you - it can be a starting point. Your photographer is there to be creative with you, but if there is something in your heart feel free to speak up. We can’t meet your expectations if we don’t know them. Be ready to have fun. A portrait experience is supposed to be a good time for all - celebrities do them all the time and we all want to be like celebrities, right?
