ARE GENETICALLY MODIFIED BABIES

JUSTIFIABLE?

Introduction: play the dog card

Seia: This party believes that genetically modifying babies is

justifiable. This is because it can lead to an increase in
employment rate, lower childhood mortality rates, and
eradication of genetic diseases. As someone who knows many
people experiencing difficulties from birth, (such as my friend
Andrew who suffered from Glaucoma in his right eye which had
to be removed when he was only 3 months old. Another
example was my friend Samantha who suffered from a brain
aneurysm which has gotten cured, but she still suffers
occasionally from headaches.) Therefore, I can assure you that
genetic modification of babies should be justified and
recommended for those who believe that humans should
accelerate in the evolution of humankind, as it can decrease the
childhood mortality, as well as having more people to work
increasing the employment rate and level of output, and the
destruction on genetic diseases.

Genetic factors are responsible for IA formation, especially in multiple and

familiarly aneurysms. The affected genes also depend on ethnicity.

Point 2: Genetically Modifying babies is justified as it can help remove genetic related
diseases.
To further develop our point. Other Examples of genetic related diseases that could be
eradicated through modification include those such as Down Syndrome, which effects about
1 in 700 children at birth, Sickle Cell Anaemia, affecting roughly one in four births, or 25%
of people. Seeing as there are roughly 7 billion people that populate the Earth, that would
mean approximately 1.938 billion people have sickle cell anaemia, while approximately 11
million people have Down Syndrome. If genetic modification were to be utilised, this could
help prevent most, if not, any of those diseases from infecting someone. Not only that, but the
genetic modification of babies may also help in the eradication of all those diseases overall,
as if no one is infected by them, they could be completely wiped out. The CRISPR program,
a genetic editing tool first used in 2012 has been said to have that potential to wipe out
genetic diseases, while maintaining faster, cheaper, and easier to use than thought.

Even if genetic modification has a chance of failure during the process, the cost would not be
that great. This is because, unlike what you might think, genetic modification has no effect on
physical features. This is because how you look is seen in your Somatic cells, while genetic
modification may take place rather in the reproductive cells, and so can not only prevent
genetic diseases, but also runs a low risk of effecting how you or your baby would look
should it fail.

Points to rebut:
- How could incurables spread, mutations.
-

Eugenics

Point 3/Rebuttals- Yixuan:

-CRISPR-No HIV
-Racist???

He said that if common disorders could be avoided or delayed by genetically

modifying humans, the average disease-free lifespan could be "substantially
extended".

They are talking about “designer babies” and physical traits but it should be ethical to prevent
genetic diseases-think about that

The gene editing method is known as CRISPR, it was renowned for making babies immune to
a DNA strand called CCR5. MIT Technology review called it, “rendeng,” the babies to be
immune to HIV, Cholera and Smallpox. Multiple reports have chosen specific words such as
rendering, which is what you do to a computer to create a photorealistic image. MIT’s article
relates babies to computers, that you control, you tell it what to do.

Hospitals are working on making test racks for babies

It is no t recommended but it Is about it being justofies
