Fundamental Safety Instructions
General remark to Navigation Echo sounder ES-5000.
Even with a carefully selected transducer position and proper installation, the function of
hydro acoustic equipment can be impaired by turbulence, acoustic noise or aerated water.
As main causes, the following can be stated:
- Propeller(s) running reverse;
- Thruster(s) in operation, especially at low speed ahead;
- Engine noise, transferred to the transducer either by the hull structure or through the water,
the latter especially as bottom-reflection in shallow water;
- Loosing sonar contact with the water at extremely bad weather, as a result of violent
pitching;
- Hot water discharges from power plants;
- Rising cold water in several sea areas.
This list above is not complete; we will be pleased to assist with further information on
request, see also chapter 3.1 Installation, of the Technical Handbook TH 52 590 8001 E.
The ES-5000 Echo sounder has been built in accordance with state of the art standards and
recognised safety regulations. Nevertheless, it may constitute a risk of life or limb of the user
and or third parties, or cause damage to the vessel and or other material property if the
following rules are not complied with.
The ES-5000 Echo sounder must only be used in technically flawless condition in accordance
with it’s designated use and the instructions contained in this Service Manual and the
Technical Handbook and only by safety conscious persons who are fully aware of the risks
involved in operating such a system.
The ES-5000 is designed exclusively for use as a navigational echo sounder. Using the system
for purposes other than this is considered contrary to it’s designated use. The manufacturer
cannot be held responsible for any damage resulting from such misuse. The risk of such
misuse lies entirely with the user.
Personal entrusted with operating the system must have read the Technical Handbook, in
particular the section of safety measures before and during operation. Reading these
instructions after starting the system is too late. This applies especially to persons who only
work with the system occasionally, e.g. during setting up or maintenance.
Always observe the maintenance/inspection intervals laid down in the Technical Handbook.

Service Manual ES-5000 SH 52 590 8001 E 3

Use only authorised spare parts and never replace defective fuses by those of any other rating
than specified.
Switch the system OFF immediately if trouble occurs with the electrical system.
Work on the system must only be carried out by a qualified technician or a specially trained
person working under the supervision of such a technician. Electrical engineering regulations
must be observed at all times.
Observe all safety instructions and warnings attached to the system. Ensure that such safety
instructions and warnings are always complete, visible and perfectly legible.
Never make any modifications, additions or conversions to the system without the
manufacturers full approval.
If the system is shut down for maintenance or repair, it must be secured against inadvertent
switching ON by isolating the system from the mains power supply and attaching a sign to the
front plate of the display and control unit stating that the unit must not be switched ON
because maintenance or repair work is being carried out.
Always check tighten any screwed connections, e.g. plugs, sockets and terminals, which may
have been loosened during maintenance or repair work.
Always dispose of replaced parts in accordance with local environmental regulations.
Check the system regularly for defective cables, connections etc.
Alterations within the SERVICES menu must only be made by qualified persons.
Altering setting within this menu may lead to incorrect depth readings, which in turn may
lead to loss of life or limb.
Service technicians opening the display and control unit for repair purposes must observe the
tightening torque of the capped nut and washer, see items 17, 27 in drawing: ECHOLOT
ES-5000-01 to 10, 52 590 8001 to 8010 in Chap. 6.1 „Drawings“ of the Service Manual.
Echo sounding systems and remote indicators which detect and display the water depth from
a single momentary value per transmission pulse, e.g. digital and pointer displays, can, over a
period of time display false readings. This is primarily valid in shallow water areas. For this
reason, water depth displayed in this manner must be compared with graphic presentation at
such intervals as to guarantee the ship’s safety.

1 General

The ES-5000 echo sounder for navigational application offers a wide variety for use together
with different transducers on different frequencies.
Also several information are available at the serial interfaces.
The following descriptions explain the function and settings of the echo sounder.
But only trained personal should change original settings.

1.1 Approvals

The ES-5000 system is approved by the German authority BSH ( Bundesamt für
Seeschiffahrt und Hydrographie ) and complies with IMO regulations.
BSH approval tests were carried out according to IEC 945/EN 60945 (Environmental test)
and ISO 9875 (Performance test).
-Approvals from other authorities are available on special request.
Note: The approvals are only valid for use with specific transducers and digital slave display
as listed below.

ELAC transducer list:

Frequency Impedance Max.Power Average Detection Range * Transducer Name

50 kHz 70 Ohm 200 W 600 m LSE 297

70 Ohm 150 W 500 m LSE 116
70 Ohm 450 W 1200 m LSE 133
30 kHz 70 Ohm 1000 W 2000 m LSE 131
70 Ohm 450 W 1200 m LSE 132
150 Ohm 2000 W** 3000 m LSE 138
100 kHz 70 Ohm 450 W 600 m LSE 148
* Average Detection Range depends on water conditions. ** With external booster

As a slave display ELAC DAZ 25 is approved, for ES-5000 in a single channel version as
well for dual channel units.
An important demand for safety reasons is the ability of the slave display to indicate the
transducer in use for dual channel operation.

Service Manual ES-5000 SH 52 590 8001 E 6

Beside the transducers mentioned in a.m. transducer list, ES-5000 can operate with several
transducers of other manufacturers.
But this requires a performance calculation and approval by ELAC.
Basic inputs for the performance calculation are:
Operating frequency
Transducer impedance
Beam width ( - 3 dB )
Degradation of sensitivity at 5 ° and 10 ° beam angle
Maximum allowable power to the transducer or source level

1.2 Components list

Basic components of the echo sounder ES-5000 as shown in SP 52 590 8001 are:

Illumination is controlled by the DIM function.

Service Manual ES-5000 SH 52 590 8001 E 7

Display
The 640x480 pixel LCD (06 453 0026 / documents not part of this manual) with integrated
dimmable illumination is fully controlled by the PSE 33.

Main power supply

Main power supply (LV 06 990 1105 / documents not part of this manual) provides three DC
voltages: +5 V, +15 V, -15 V necessary for PSE 33.

Auxiliary power supply LP3

PCB LP3 (SP 52 590 1803) prepares a continuous DC voltage, which is used to turn on the
ES-5000.
A relay switches the main power supply to PSE 33.
The echo sounder starts operation with the parameters stored during the past operating period.
LP3 also supplies the external digital slave indicator DAZ 25.

1.3 Block diagram 1, PSE 33

The block diagram 1 shows the main electronic board PSE 33 together with the interfaces to
the other ES-5000 components.
The different grey shadings refer to different functional blocks, which are documented in the
related circuit diagram SP 57 299 1801 sheet 1 to sheet 7.

1.4 Functional description

PSE 33 is the complete echo sounder electronic including keyboard interface, video interface,
and external serial interface as shown in block diagram 1.

Sheet 1 of SP 57 299 1801 is a complete circuit diagram of PSE 33.

Sheet 2 of SP 57 299 1801 is the processor system with µP 80C 166 processor,
program storage D 23, D 24, D 43, D 44, Memory: D 25 to D 26.
D 27 to D 30 is a battery powered, ring organised non-volatile memory for the storage of
depth information of at least the last 24 hours of operation.
Most logic components are realised in the programmable IC`s MACH.

Service Manual ES-5000 SH 52 590 8001 E 8

Sheet 3 of SP 57 299 1801 shows the video controller which handles all data and
control signals to operate the LCD.

Sheet 4 of SP 57 299 1801 is the frequency generator for transmit and receive.
Two independent programmable blocks (single-/dual-frequency) can be fitted, which are
programmed during turning on the echo sounder.
1 of 8 frequencies can be independently programmed to each block. (Refer to Technical
Handbook).
Output signals are NFA/B to the transmitter and FHF to the mixer in the receiver part.

Sheet 5 of SP 57 299 1801 is the receiver section.

The echo signal input to the receiver are ports OUT.
After the preamplifier the echo signal is mixed to 455 kHz IF in IC N 10 with the use of FHF.
Amplification with fixed STC (Sensitivity Time Control) is done in IF-amplifier N 13 for a
time period corresponding to a depth of about 15 m.
After that time an algorithm, taking into account the propagation loss of 20 log 2r calculates
automatic gain setting for proper echo acquiring.
AGC (Automatic Gain Control) is applied to N 12.
For further data processing the rectified signal (port Signal) is digitised in 1 of 10 A/D-
converters of the µP.
The maximum receiver sensitivity at full gain is about 10 µV.

Sheet 6 of SP 57 299 1801 is the power amplifier for transmitting.

The NFA/B signal of the frequency generator controls a full bridge power amplifier.
The secondary windings of transformer T2 are connected to the transducer ports OUT.
Some transformer taps can be used for transducer impedance matching.
Output power is controlled by USEND.
USEND is generated with the circuitry around N3,
The different possibilities of power settings are explained in chapter 3.1.

Sheet 7 of SP 57 299 1801 shows the circuitry to generate the voltages necessary to
drive the LCD, including a temperature compensation network to make the LCD working at a
temperature range of -15 °C to +55 °C.

2 Test facilities

The intention of this service manual is not to prepare a documentation, which enables the user
to locate each fault.
It is a summary of existing tools to assist troubleshooting:
Block diagrams with signal schematics
Performance test / adjustment procedures
Special test software (requires the connection of ES-5000 to a PC)

2.1 Test diagrams

The following block diagrams 2 to 7 contain timing diagrams and test points for some
important signals.
Because of the complexity of the digital processing circuits they are not described, but test
points are existing for the echo sounder part of main board PSE 33.
Left hand side of the respective block diagram always the related sheet to the circuit diagram
is called out.

Block diagram 2 Sheet 1 of SP 57 299 1801:

Key „ON“ Pressing „On“ activates the relays to enable main power supply.
Key “OFF“ After about 3 seconds a „NMI“ ( Non Maskeable Interrupt ) indicates the µP
a turn off.
All running processes are stopped, all important data stored, then the processor deactivates
the relays for the power supply.

Block diagram 3 Sheet 2 of SP 57 299 1801:

DIM LED controls the illumination of the keypad lighting.
DIM LCD controls the brightness of the CFL (Cold Fluorescent Lamp) of the LCD.

Block diagram 3 Sheet 4 of SP 57 299 1801:

SEND is the envelop of the transmitter pulse, which enables the generator to produce
a pulse train with the nominal transmitting frequency f0.
A0 and A1 are the power bridge steering signals with the frequency f0/2.
Phase delay between the two signals is 180°.

Service Manual ES-5000 SH 52 590 8001 E 10

FHF is the modulation frequency f0+ 455 kHz, 455 kHz is the centre frequency of
the crystal filter.

Block diagram 4 Sheet 5 of SP 57 299 1801:

Sounding cycle begins with the SEND-transmit time, which is range dependent.
Data acquisition time is 1,5 times of nominal travel time for selected scale ranges up to 50 m.
(Scale range 50 m = data acquisition time 75 m)
Above 50 m the factor is 1,2 (scale range 250 m = data acquisition time 300 m).
This factor determines the digitising characteristics.
After the data acquisition time the transmitter voltage to control the output power will be
refreshed (re-charge C 28).
Gain control The gain adjustment procedure is described in ES 52 590 8001.
Signal level for V=Vmax
The signal level for V=Vmax correspond to ES 52 590 8001.
Observe, the frequency will change with modulation.
(Reference test points: N13/8 = P2/2, N13/1 = P2/1, V43 = P3/1 Ground:
P1)

Block diagram 5 Sheet 6 of SP 57 299 1801:

Transmit voltage explains the generation of the transmitter voltage.
Hold capacitor C 28 is re-charged to preset values.
Transmitter output The transmitter diagram shows the signal flow during the active phase
of the two 180° phase delayed signals.
Transmitting pulse at the end of the outgoing pulse should not be less than x 0,7 of the voltage
at the beginning of the transmitting pulse.

Block diagram 6 Sheet 7 of SP 57 299 1801:

VEE Each LCD needs a slightly different control voltage for optimum
contrast and visibility.
This voltage can be adjusted by R 50. (See also chapter 2.3)
Additional, adapting various light conditions on the bridge, the contrast can be influenced in
the MENU „Contrast up/down“.
This settings require a perfect preadjustment of R 50.

The ES-5000 is a universal echosounder for use with various transducers with different power
and frequencies. ( For approvals please see 1.1)
Note: Only trained personal shall change original settings.

3.1 Variable bridge settings

Basic bridge settings are: (With this settings the ES-5000 is shipped to the customer)
W1: 1-2 W2: 3-4 W3: 1-2 X28: -
X20: - X21: 1-2 X22: 1-2 X24: -
X25: 1-2
X26: 1-2

Explanation of bridge function:

W1, W2, W3, X28 ( see SP 57 299 1801, page 6 ) allow the output power control.

W1: Controls the output power of the transmitter.

A voltage divider R 44 and R 46 determines the feedback voltage of N3.
N3 is a voltage regulator for USEND.
With these two resistors USEND will be 30 V.
So the output voltage of the transmitter will be 2x USEND= Up-p 60 V.
This transmit voltage is used for scale ranges 10, 50 m and for frequencies lower than
100 kHz also for the 250 m scale.
For scale ranges more than 250 m, and for frequencies 100 kHz and above also in the 250 m
scale, a higher transmit voltage is required, depending on the transducer performance.
With W1: 1-2 USEND is set to 160 V, giving about 200 W to a 70 Ω load,
With W1: 3-4 350 V USEND are applied, which lead to about 1 kW to a 70 Ω load.
The switchover, range scale dependend, is done by UPOWER.
The frequency dependend use of power in the 250 m scale takes care of the increasing
attenuation of energy with increasing frequency.
For further details please refer to following table.

2000 m all 160 V DC 320 Vpp 1-2
2000 m all 350 V DC 700 Vpp 3-4

W2: The output transformer T2 has 3 secondary taps: see „Examples for various setting
combinations“

W3: Is not used at the moment and must always stay with 1-2.

X 28: For special application like transducers installed in ice resistent housings with loss in
the acoustic window.
USEND can be set individually. Set jumper X28: 1-2 and adjust the output voltage by R 169.
Maximum setting is USEND= 130 V.

Examples for various setting combinations:

If W1: 1-2 is selected:

W2: 3-4: matches primary/secondary windings 1:1, is the standard for 200 W at 75 Ω.
W2: 1-2: transformer is set to 1:0,6 for transducers with 75 Ω., 100 W.
W2: 5-6: transformer is set to 1:1,5 for transducers with 150 Ω., 200 W or 75 Ω, 400 W.

If W1: 3-4 is selected:

W2: 3-4: matches primary/secondary windings 1:1, is the standard for 1000 W at 75 Ω.
W2: 1-2: transformer is set to 1:0,6 for transducers with 75 Ω., 500 W.
W2: 5-6: transformer is set to 1:1,5 for transducers with 150 Ω., 1000 W.

X20, X21, X22, X24: ( see SP 57 299 1801, page 2 )

are only for factory internal use and have never to be changed, except if explicit
mentioned for special purposes.

Service Manual ES-5000 SH 52 590 8001 E 25

X25 ( see SP 57 299 1801, page 4 ) removes power from the transmitter to avoid transmitting
during the in-factory initialisation of the computer system.

X26 ( see SP 57 299 1801, page 1 ):

X26 shorted enables power supply to DAZ 25 digital slave indicator.
(For future ES-5000 beginning with serial Nr. -tbd-, DAZ 25 automatically is switched on and
off with ES-5000 by a relais. For this sounders X26 jumper is removed.).

3.2 Frequency Selection

The procedure for setting the frequency to the respective installed transducer please refer to
Technical Handbook TH 52 590 8001 chapter 3.1.1.
After setting the frequency the echo sounder has to be switched off and restarted again.

Note: Up to now the use of 200 kHz as single frequency echo sounder cannot be approved by
the authorities, as this ES-5000 version cannot reach 400 m detection range.
In the near future, with a requirement of only 200m detection range by IMO, also the 200 kHz
version can be approved.

3.3 Dual Channel Installation

For instruction for modification of PSE 33 to a dual-channel version please refer to

UN 52 590 4001.
