Eating Differently in a Warmer World

I
When people think about climate change, they imagine a world with shorter winters and longer
summers, flooded coastal cities or extreme weather changes. They don’t think about what they eat.
However, because of warmer temperatures there will be less of foods which are affected by the rising
heat and more of those that survive with more heat and less water. In 2016, wheat growers in France
5 realized something was wrong. Their harvest was 25% smaller than usual. The reason was an
unusually warm winter which increased the spread of diseases and the number of pests.

II
Scientists are studying the effect of global warming on food supplies. Some are using greenhouses or
experimental fields of plants. Others are using a computer model where they model the growth of
plants and assess changes in crop yields:they change one factor each time while leaving the others
10 unchanged. The focus of the studies is the world’s 4 most important food crops: wheat, rice, corn and
soybeans which provide two-thirds of the calories that people eat.

III
They found that a 1 degree Celsius increase in temperature causes the corn harvest to fall by 7%-8% ,
wheat by 6 %, rice and soy by 3%. First, when temperatures rise, fewer plants grow and they don’t rot
into compost which lowers the soil’s nutrients; plants using this soil don’t get as much food to grow.
15 Second, because of global warming, the CO2* in the air has increased causing food plants to grow to
smaller sizes. Third, weeds, that like the increased heat, compete with crops.

IV
Today there are 7.6 billion people on Earth. The United Nations predicts there will be 9.8 billion by
2050. That's many people to feed. However, there is hope. While we cannot stop climate change, we
can try to slow it down. We can adapt our farming methods, learn from weeds how to strengthen
20 major food crops and look for foods that grow well in hotter weather. It’s up to us!!

Dangerous Distractions While Driving

I
50% of car accidents are caused when drivers are distracted while driving. 25% of them are
distractions in the car! In January 2020, a survey was carried out by the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (U.S.). Of the 2000 drivers who responded to the survey, 37.1% of those who
responded agreed that using a mobile device impaired their ability to drive safely. Despite this, 28.6%
5 of them said that they used mobile devices to text, answer calls or taking pictures while driving. The
reason was that they felt pressured to do so.

II
However, there are other distractions which result in accidents. The survey found that 19% were
caused by drivers eating and drinking while driving. 9.4% of the accidents were caused by other
people in the car making noise, for example:crying children or teenage friends having fun in the
10 back seat. Playing around with radios and CD players caused 11% of them. The conclusion is that
when you drive – drive. Doing other things – eating, texting, talking to friends in the back seat,
playing music – endangers your life!
