Ethics - 4Qs

Qualifications for New Lawyers, including those reacquiring citizenship

For those with any foreign background:


1. If from a foreign law school, you need: LEB-accredited Law School courses + 4th year
units
2. If you lose Filipino citizenship:
a. The MOMENT you lose it, you lose the privilege to practice law
b. To reacquire it:
i. Reacquire citizenship (RA 9225)
ii. Update annual membership dues in the IBP
iii. Pay PTR
iv. Complete 36 hrs of MCLE
v. Retake Lawyer’s Oath

NOTE: Requisites ii to iv are ALSO what you need at the end of pleadings and Motions.

3. If you stay abroad, you are NOT exempted from paying IBP dues

OTHER continuing requirements:


1. Good Moral Character
2. Being in good and regular standing (medyo same rin sila)

Moral Turpitude Rules:


1. If crime involves moral turpitude: may be subject to disbarment / precluded from being
admitted to the bar
2. If crime does NOT involve moral turpitude:
a. GR: not subject to disbarment / precluded from being admitted to the bar
b. XPN: if the applicant CONCEALS the crime not involving moral turpitude
