Chapter 8: LISTENING IN CLASS AND TAKE GOOD NOTES

1. How do you understand “an active listener”?


“An active listener” is a student who preview lessons before class and in necessary
situations, they are always ready to make appropriate comments or questions to make
sure that their understanding the lecture well.
2. How to improve classroom listening? List at least 5.
To improve class listening, there are many ways:
- Preview the books and the chapter for the following class.
- Don’t skip meal so that you can focus on the lecture.
- Focus on the lecture: lecturers will give you the hint about what is important to learn.
- Ask questions to make sure that you understand the lecture correctly.
- Watch the chalk board. Lecturers may give you the hints to solve the problem or to
prepare for tests.

- Be polite, use the appropriate words.
- Be specific when make questions.
- Raise your hands or wait until the lecturer stops speaking to ask questions.
- If you don’t understand the theoretical explanation for the problem, ask for an example.
- Have a prior on the questions that benefit other students.
5. What are the note-taking formats shared in the textbook? What is the type of learning
information which might be appropriate for each format?
The note-taking formats shared in the textbook are: traditional note-taking, Cornell note-
taking, summaries, terminology notes, chart, timelines, maps and so on.

- Cornell note-taking: for
- Summaries: for paragraphs that includes major ideas.
- Terminology notes: for information that is specific or academic.
- Chart: for numbers and surveys
- Timelines: for historical events
- Maps: for geographical information
