NIHILISM ACROSS BOUNDARIES

Nihilism Across Boundaries will bring together researchers and scholars to discuss different phenomena and
moments that can be understood as the expression of nihilism. It will be an international space to discuss,
learn, and unlearn how numerous manifestations of nihilism have been addressed throughout the history of
global philosophy and literature.

The term ‘Nihilism’ has received conflicting definitions throughout history. But, in general, Nihilism indicates
the ‘prevalence of Nothingness over values or existence itself’. Hence, there are various forms of nihilism:
existential, moral, cultural, social, political, artistic, religious, among others.

Nihilism Across Boundaries is an attempt to think about conflicting narratives of the renunciation and
embracing of nihilism, as an interdisciplinary problem. So, it intends not only to make specialized reflections
within the philosophical discipline, but also to approach it from different angles: critical, conceptual,
constructive, empirical, etc. The focus of the conference is accordingly interdisciplinary and international, as
well as intermedial. It will also encourage a focus on articulations of nihilism as manifested in Portuguese
literature.

We invite proposals for 20-minute paper presentations from researchers and scholars working in
different fields, using different interpretations of nihilism. Contributions can respond to the
following themes:

Keynote speakers
WILLIAM DESMOND
Villanova University (Pennsylvania, USA)

WILLIAM DESMOND is the David R. Cook Chair in Philosophy at Villanova

University (USA). He is also an Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the Catholic
University of Leuven (KULeuven, Belgium). He accumulates a series of former
presidential posts, such as President of the Hegel Society of America(1990-1992)
and of the Metaphysical Society of America (1995).
Desmond has written extensively on ontology, metaphysics, aesthetics, ethics, and
religion. Notable ideas: Metaxology, Intimate strangeness of Being, Intimate
universal, Ethos, The Potencies of Being, The Senses of Being.

RAINER GULDIN
Università della Svizzera Italiana (Lugano, Switzerland)

RAINER GULDIN is a Professor of German Culture and Literature at the

Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI, Lugano, Switzerland). He is a polyglot and
prolific writer (speaks and writes fluently in German, Italian, French, English,
Spanish and Portuguese). Research interests: Metaphor theory, history and theory
of translation and multilingualism in literature and philosophy, language theory and
history of the body.

He is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed multilingual e-journal

Flusser Studies, which has published 34 issues since 2005.

EVA BATLIČKOVÁ
Masaryk University (Brno, Czech Republic)

EVA BATLIČKOVÁ earned her PhD. at the University of São Paulo (USP). She is
currently teaching at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic. Fields of
interest include Contemporary Philosophy, Portuguese-language literature, and
Jewish Studies.

She communicates and writes in Czech, Portuguese and English. Recent books
include: Saul de Vilém Flusser: Dialogo e Subversão (2019) e A Época Brasileira
 JOÃO CONSTÂNCIO
Nova Lisboa (NOVA, FCSH, Portugal)

João Constâncio is a Full Professor of Philosophy at the Nova University of

Lisbon, where he received his doctorate in 2005, with a dissertation on images
and conceptions of human life in Plato, and where he has been teaching since
1996. He is the executive coordinator of the Department of Philosophy and the
Director of IFILNOVA.

Philosophy, Plato, Kant, Schopenhauer, Philosophy & Cinema, Ancient

PAULO BORGES
Lisbon University (Portugal)

Paulo Borges is Professor at the Department of Philosophy the University of

Lisbon, and a researcher at the Centre for Philosophy at the same university.
He teachers Philosophy of Religion, Eastern Though, Philosophy and
Meditation, Philosophy and Literature, and Philosophical Anthropology. In
addition, he investigates and publishes in the areas of Luso-Brazilian thought
and culture, as well as Philosophy of Nature.
Professor Borges is a prolific writer, having authored a series of books on his
teaching topics.

Niilismo: Cruzando Fronteiras reunirá pesquisadores e estudiosos para discutir diferentes fenômenos e
momentos que podem ser entendidos como a expressão do niilismo. Será um espaço internacional para
discutir, aprender e desaprender como inúmeras manifestações do niilismo foram abordadas ao longo da
história da filosofia e literatura globais.

O termo "niilismo" recebeu definições conflitantes ao longo da história. Mas, em geral, niilismo indica a
"prevalência do Nada sobre os valores ou a própria existência". Assim, há várias formas de niilismo:
existencial, moral, cultural, social, político, artístico, religioso, entre outros.

Niilismo: Cruzando Fronteiras é uma tentativa de discutirmos as narrativas conflitantes de ‘renúncia’ ou

‘aceitação’ do niilismo, como um problema interdisciplinar. Pretende-se, assim, não só fazer reflexões
especializadas no âmbito da disciplina filosófica, mas também abordar o tema sob diferentes ângulos: crítico,
conceptual, construtivo, empírico, etc. O foco da conferência é consequentemente interdisciplinar e
internacional, bem como intermidiático. Também incentivará um foco nas articulações do niilismo
manifestadas na literatura portuguesa.
PROMOÇÃO E ANFITRIÃO
Niilismo: Cruzando Fronteiras é uma organização do Instituto de Filosofia da Universidade do
Porto – e, no seu seio, pelo grupo de investigação Raízes e Horizonte da Filosofia e da Cultura em
Portugal.

Villanova University (Pensilvânia, EUA)

WILLIAM DESMOND é o David R. Cook Chair em Filosofia na Villanova

University. É professor emérito de filosofia na Universidade Católica de
Leuven (Bélgica). Desmond foi presidente da Hegel Society of America
(1990-1992) e da Metaphysical Society of America (1995).
É autor de importante trabalhos sobre ontologia, metafísica, estética, ética e
religião. Algumas ideias filosóficas notáveis: Metaxologia, Estranheza
Íntima do Ser, Universal Íntimo, Ethos, As Potências do Ser, Os Sentidos do
Ser.

RAINER GULDIN
Universidade da Suíça Italiana (Lugano, Suíça)

RAINER GULDIN é professor de Cultura e Literatura Alemã. É um escritor

poliglota e prolífico (fala e escreve em alemão, italiano, francês, inglês,
espanhol e português). Interesses de investigação: Teoria da metáfora, história e
teoria da tradução e multilinguismo na literatura e na filosofia, teoria da
linguagem e história do corpo.
É o fundador e editor-chefe da revista eletrônica multilíngue Flusser Studies,
que já publicou 34 edições desde 2005.

EVA BATLIČKOVÁ
Universidade de Masaryk (Brno, República Checa)

EVA BATLIČKOVÁ obteve seu doutorado na Universidade de São Paulo

(USP). Atualmente leciona na Masaryk University. As áreas de interesse
incluem Filosofia Contemporânea, Literatura de Língua Portuguesa e
Estudos Judaicos.
Ela se comunica e escreve em tcheco, português e inglês. Livros recentes
incluem: Saul de Vilém Flusser: Dialogo e Subversão (2019) e A Época
 JOÃO CONSTÂNCIO
Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal)

João Constâncio é Professor Catedrático de Filosofia do

Departamento de Filosofia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (NOVA
FCSH), onde se doutorou, em 2005, com uma dissertação sobre
imagens e concepções da vida humana em Platão, e onde ensina
desde 1996. É Coordenador Executivo do Departamento de Filosofia
e Diretor do IFILNOVA.
Especialização: Nietzsche, Estética e Filosofia da Arte, História da
Filosofia, Platão, Kant, Schopenhauer, Filosofia & Cinema, Filosofia

PAULO BORGES
Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal)

Paulo Borges é Professor do Departamento de Filosofia da Faculdade de

Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, e investigador do Centro de Filosofia
da mesma. Ensina Filosofia da Religião, Pensamento Oriental, Filosofia e
Meditação, Filosofia e Literatura, e Antropologia Filosófica. Além destas
áreas, investiga e publica no âmbito do Pensamento Luso-Brasileiro e de
Filosofia da Natureza. É membro correspondente da Academia Brasileira
de Filosofia e Diretor da Revista Todo o Mundo ENTRE Ninguém. É
também cofundador e presidente do Círculo do Entre-Ser, associação
filosófica e ética.
Paulo Borges é autor prolífico, tendo publicado inúmeras obras nas suas
áreas de interesse.
