In my opinion, social media is corrupting our society by creating unlikely high standards of
beauty; like losing weight and having lots of muscle. On social networking platforms, so
many photos are photo-shopped and made to look “perfect” and sometimes can put out the
message “If you don’t resemble this, you’re not beautiful or not acceptable”.
There’s also the opportunity for cyber bullying to occur. If you’re being bullied at school,
normally you can go home to escape the harassment. But nowadays people will send cruel
messages and post horrific things about you online. Depending on what other people post
about you and how many people see it or believe it, it can complicate and cause havoc in
people’s lives.
Social media can take away minutes and even hours from our daily lives and productivity.
It’s a distraction and slows us down and prevents us from doing work or even daily
essentials; such as eating, sleeping, exercising, and educating ourselves.
I feel that we should spend less time on social media and spend more time doing things we
truly enjoy and spending time with family and friends, instead of just texting them or
calling them. Not only will it benefit and improve mental and physical health, spending
less time on the internet will help us live our lives to the fullest and increase performance
in more intelligent, creative and imaginative things.
13. Which of the following IS NOT the writer’s argument about social media?
A. It always promotes new standards that are too high for common people.
B. It makes people poor due to extra expenses on internet vouchers.
C. It has been misused for bullying or commiting other crimes.
D. It makes people less active and productive.
E. It takes people away from their social life.
14. “Depending on …, it can complicate and cause havoc in people’s lives.” (Paragraph 2)
The word it in this sentence refers to …
A. social media
B. opportunity
C. harassment
D. cyber bullying
E. people’s posting

People today are becoming more and more addicted to gadget. From the time they get up
up to the time they go to bed, they keep playing with their gadget or at least checking
messages on social media. To tell you the truth, this habit can lead you to a sleep disorder,
which for a long term can cause serious health problems and shorten your life. Why is it
so?
Firstly, phones do not let your mind relax. They prevent you from having a better sleep.
This happens because smartphones are designed to feed you information. Your brain will
keep racing to absorb information and your emotions will be stimulated by the content you
see online. You might be intrigued to read and comment. This stimulates the brain, so you
are more active and awake.
Secondly, the blue light from the screen suppresses melatonin, a hormone that controls the
cycle of sleep and wakefulness. This blue light from your smartphone screen is physically
harmful for both your eyes and your brain. When your body does not produce enough
melatonin, you experience insomnia, tiredness and irritability.
Lastly, the habit of checking your phone before going to bed also disrupts our emotion.
Walia, a researcher, said that emotions, whether ignited by happy videos of puppies
wagging their tails or by upsetting stories about world events, might trigger responses that
will delay your sleep.
Those reasons are enough to warn us about the dangers of lack of quality sleep for a long
term.
15. According to the writer, many people today suffer from insomnia because of …
A. watching films too much from TV.
B. doing too much homework from school.
C. staying up late everyday doing their hobbies.
D. working too much all day till they are exhausted.
E. having a habit of playing with gadget till late at night.
16. What is the expected effect from reading this text? The readers will probably …
A. stop playing gadget from the time they get up till the time they go to bed.
B. stop checking messages when it’s their time to go to bed.
C. search information more and more from their gadget.
D. buy spectacles with anti-radiation and anti-blue light.
E. go to a hospital for checking-up their eyes.

We all know that exercise is important in our daily lives, but we may not know why or
what exercise can do for us. Here are some benefits of exercises.
Exercise increases energy levels. Exercise improves both the strength and the efficiency of
your cardiovascular system to get the oxygen and nutrients to your muscles. When your
cardiovascular system works better, everything seems easier and you have more energy for
the fun stuff in life.
Exercise improves muscle strength. Staying active keeps muscles strong. The joints,
tendons and ligaments are also becoming flexible, allowing you to move more easily and
avoid injury. Strong muscles and ligaments reduce your risk of joint and lower back pain
by keeping joints in proper alignment. They also improve coordination and balance.
Exercise can help you to maintain a healthy weight. The more you exercise the more
calories you burn. In addition, the more muscle you develop, the higher your metabolic
rate becomes, so you burn more calories even when you’re not exercising. Then what is
the result? You may lose weight and look better physically, which will boost your self-
esteem.
Exercise improves brain function. Exercise increases blood flow and oxygen levels in the
brain. It also encourages the release of the brain chemicals (hormones) that are responsible
for the production of cells in the hippocampus, the part of the brain that controls memory
and learning. This, in turn, boosts concentration levels and cognitive ability, and helps
reduce the risk of cognitive degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
21. Which sentence can be the best reiteration for the text?
A. People should take enough exercise to keep their health.
B. All the facts above show the importance of exercise to our health.
C. With the above information, we should pay more attention to our health.
D. There should be an intensive education on physical exercise.
E. There is a strong relationship between exercise and health.

Distance learning has become a very popular option among students nowadays because of

learning also has some disadvantages.
Firstly, distance learning … (a) no direct contact with faculty. Lack of personal interaction
with teachers often affects the learning curve for some students. Secondly, distance
learning depends so much on technology. Many distance learning programmes (b) …
access to the internet. Students and parents have to spend more money for internet
connection.
Besides, distance learning can also cause lack of discipline, especially for students who
have low motivation. … (c) they don’t have a teacher standing on top of their head,
reminding them of deadlines or asking for their assignments, there are chances that they
will not take a distance learning programme seriously.
Last, distance learning can make students feel lonely. … (d) a student is in a virtual
classroom that is full of students, the lack of personal interaction might make him/her feel
lonely. So, in fact, distance learning also has some negative effects for students.

Dear Bobbie,
How's life with you? I hope everything is fine. Please give my regards to the rest of your
family. As I told you, I've been chosen as a captain of my school football team. At first I
was worried if I couldn't do my job well. But now I'm happy about that position. Our
team had a match last week. It was my first match as a captain.
We have been busy for practice for months. We have football practice twice a week at
4 p.m. Before we played football, I asked my team to get warming up. We ran around the
school. You know that my school is located near rice field, right? When we were
running we enjoyed the fresh air. I tried to guide my team well. I learned how to lead a
football team from my big teacher. He is also a captain of a college football team. I was
relieved that my team likes my leadership.
When the match day came I was nervous. I encouraged my team to do the best.
Fortunately, we won. I was very happy. Our football coach was proud of us. I feel more
confident about my position.
Well, we will have a match again next month. Therefore, we are busy for practice now.
You were the best football player when we were in Middle School. Please give me some
tips about how to play football well. Please reply my letter as soon as you have time.
Best regards,
Brian
Hello, sweetie…
How are you, sweetie? I know you are angry with me because I haven’t written to you for
a long time. I'm so sorry. You know, we are in Lombok right now. It is so beautiful
here. I'm writing to you from this really cute little cafe on Senggigi Beach. You know my
mom loves shopping, so she went and will be gone for hours. I am waiting here while
enjoying my cup of coffee.
You know. Yesterday we went to Gili Nanggu Island. This beach is on the Southwest of
Lombok. The beach is awesome. It is so beautiful. I couldn't believe my eyes. There are
beautiful coral reefs everywhere. We can go snorkeling and saw the most amazing fish
ever. I wish you were here. It would be much more fun if you were with us.
Mom is making sure we don't miss any site in the whole city. So, we will be going
everywhere. Sorry, sweetie. I’ve got to go. I will write to you again soon.
Lots of love,
Shinta

Hi, Sherine,
It’s been so long no see since the Covid-19 pandemic hit us. Are you okay? Do you enjoy
your distant learning? I do. By distant learning I … (a) I can learn the school materials
better. Don’t you feel the same? That’s because I don’t have to be around students who
talk out of turn and disrespect teachers. Nor around those who destroy classroom materials,
or blurt out answers during tests, push, kick and hit one another, and roll on the ground.
You may think I’m joking, … (b) I swear I’m not. This is what happens in my school
every single day. And they really steal valuable class time. More than that, they often
prevent their classmates from being prepared for tests and assessments. It’s really hard for
me to focus on the lesson. With distance learning, on the other hand, everything related to
learning can … (c) better. I can work at my own pace, too.
Well, what about your school and your classroom? I really want to hear from you after
months we just stay at home and take distance learning. Or, if you don’t want to tell about
your school and your classroom, you may tell me how you have spent your days at home.
It will be interesting for me to hear about it.
Best Regards,
Veronique Mintz
