The sate limits are: trom zero height at zero velocity, in a near level attitude, up to the maximum speed range of which the aircraft is capable between zero altitude and 18250 m (50000 ft). 2 ‘There are three BRIOLCX seat variants: - BRIOLCX - BRIOLOX-+ - BRIOLOX2 3 ‘The BRIOLCX seat is designed for installation in the single-seat aircraft. The BRIOLCX-1 and BRI0LCX-2 are designed for combined installation in the twin-seater aircraft, BRI0LCX-1 being mounted in the front and BR10LCX-2 in the rear. 4 ‘The seat is ejected by gas pressure developed within a telescopic ejection gun when the cartridges: ‘are ignited. An under-seat rocket pack fires when the ejection gun is at the top end of its stroke The added thrust of the rocket pack and ejection gun carries the seat to a safe height for the parachute to deploy even it ejection is at zero velocity, zero altitude at a near level attitude. The rocket packs have large efflux nozzles on the right side of the BRTOLCX and BRYOLCX-1 pack and on the let side for the BR10LCX-2 pack. This makes sure thatthe front and rear seats of the two-seat aircraft are ejacted with aleft and right trajectory respectively. ‘Aiter ejection, the seat is stabilised and the forward speed reduced by a duplex drogue system, followed by the automatic deployment of a personal parachute and separation of the aircrew member from the seat. 5 Ejection is initiated when the aircrew member pulls the seat tiring handle on the front ofthe seat pan. ‘A canopy fracturing system, fractures the canopy immediately before seat ejection. If the canopy fracturing system does not operate the canopy penetrators on the parachute containor will break the canopy and clear the ejectees path as the seat rises through the shattered canopy. After ejection the parachute operation and the man/seat separation is automatic. f the automatic system fails, a manual separation (override) system is provided to permit the man/seat separation and deployment ofthe parachute, 6 In the two-seat aircraft the election sequence can be controlled by a Command Firing System (CFS) where fited. GENERAL 7 Generally, each seat consists of - seat structure + seat cartridge set = PSP cartridge set - OBOGS disconnection assembly - Time-telease cartridge assembly - motor rocket pack assembly + ejection gun installation assembly Page 1-1-2 Nov 07 (Amdt 1) Date of Print: 12-dic-2011 KA-8-95-10-00-00A-040A-C_002 fm MBs270 Ejection gun and rocket motor 8 ‘The ejection gun installation assembly is mounted rigidly to the aircraft via the aircraft installation {and mounting materials and provides a mounting platform forthe seat and ejection gun ofthe seat assembly, ‘The motor rocket pack assembly is mounted beneath the seat assembly. SEAT STRUCTURE 9 ‘The seat structure consists of the following = Seat assembly ~ emergency oxygen bottie ~ parachute assembly (including Negative G strap and Negative G 'V" straps) - Personal Survival Pack (PSP) main beam assembly Zhe negative G strap and ‘V'straps are fited in combination withthe hamess assembly The seat assembly «also comprises the ejection gun mounted in the ejection gun installation Seat assembly On ne Seat Pan Is attached to sliding members on a seat structure, The seat pan height can be adjusted {through movement within an electrically powered actuator. The actuator is controlled via a switch mounted on {he right hand side of the aircraft console. A manual separation (override) handle for the emergency hamess ‘release is installed on the right side of the seat pan, The handle is connected to a firing unit which when fired starts the hamess release sequence. The seat fring handle is installed on the forward edge of the seat pan ands connected fo the seat fring unit atached to the underside of the seat pan, Under the seat pan isa met, ‘ubed rocket pack mounted on bearings situated in the lower seat pan sides. Emergency oxygen © oration Seat mounted oxygen sets attached tothe left side of the seat pan, The aircraft on board oxygen generation system (OBOGS) connactor is connected to an oxygen regulator by an oxygen hose and an ‘emergency oxygen (EO) pipe. The OBOGS connector has an automatic quick-release mechanism from the aireraft OBOGS supply and is also connected by a hose to a seat mounted EO cylinder. Regulated aircraft Supplied OBOGS oxygen or EO from the botle is supplied tothe aircrew member through an oxygen nose. The micitel lead and connector of the electrical services cable assembly is also clipped to this hose. The emergency oxygen cylinder and release mechanism system is installed on the left rear of the seat pan. A handle on the left side of the seat pan permits manual selection of the emergency oxygen supply should the ‘BOGS oxygen supply fal. Parachute assembly 12 nrag, tilt Container attached to the upper front face of the seat structure houses @ packed parachute. ‘The parachute consists of a GO aeroconical parachute, a5 ft main drogue and a 22in. controller drogue, The Pack's strap connected to the combined seal and parachute hamess, nogative G strep and V" straps, Personal Survival Pack 28 ich ion? Darsonal survival pack (PSP) is installed in the seat pan. tis a kevlar/carbon case, on the top cof which isa cushion, and has the dual purpose of cushion support and a container fora feraft and survival ‘equipment Now 07 (Amat 1) Page 1-1-3 Date of Print: 12-dic-2011 KA-B-95-10-00-00A-0408-G_vvz.1m Main beams assembly 44 The main beam assembly consists of a pair of sliding guide rails with cross beams for the mounting {or the ejection gun. in addition, the assembly provides a rigid mounting for the powered hamess retraction unit. A drogue gun is attached to the left main beam. The drogue gun automatically deploys the drogue ‘assembly during an automatic sequence, The automatic sequence for deployment of the parachute and the release of the crew member from the seat is controlled by a barostatic time rolease unit (BTRU) attached to ‘the right main beam. 1 The ejection gun provides the power to eject the seat, It comprise two telescopic tubes, a cylinder {ube with a gas fired primary gun and a further two secondary cartridges that are fired by the pressure and heat generated from the ignition of the primary cartridge. Two guide rails are attached to the side of the jection gun. The seat assembly is locked in position on the ejection gun by a top latch assembly in the upper ‘cross beam. Seat cartridge set 16 Tho seat cartridge set comprises cartridge assemblies forthe following: + seat initiator = primary ejection cartridge ~ secondary ejection cartridges ~ drogue gun (primary and secondary) = Barostatic time release unit (BTRU) and MOR (Manual Override) - Hamess power retraction unt (HPRU) + rocket motor igniter = rocket motor initiator 17 For seats mounted in the twin-seat aircraft, the seat cartridge set can differ depending on the installation of the command fring system (CFS) (Chap 16 for precise details). PSP cartridge set 418 The PSP cartridge set comprises a single cartridge assembly designed for firing the automatic, deployment unit (ADU). The purpose of the PSP cartridge is to provide a timed separation of the PSP from the ejected pilot, thereby reducing the impact weight. OBOGS disconnection assembly 19 The OBOGS disconnection assembly is mounted to the seat assembly and provides disconnection of the onboard oxygen from the seat coupled with an initiation of the seat emergency oxygen supply during the ejection procedure. Time-delay cartridge assembly 20 __Thetime-delay cartridge assembly is mountad to the ballistic manifold and comprises a pair of delay ‘cartridges mounted in parallel. The cartridges provide a timed delay within the ejection process to match the time required to fracture the canopy. Page 1-1-4 Now 07 (Amat 1) Date of Print: 12-die-2011 KA-B-95-10-00-00A-040A-C_002.1m MBS27A MAJOR SEAT DIFFERENCES Generat 21 __ There are several component differences between the seats installed, though in the main, their ‘construation and purpose remain identical. The major diffrence lies in the location differences. In the case of the twin-seat aircraft the close proximity of each seat is catered for, as is the introduction of the CFS. 22 __ This handbook is based on the single seat installation BRIOLCX seat. The reader will be alerted to information that relates to one specific seat type only. BRIOLCX-1 23 The BRIOLCX-1 differs from the BR10LCX as follows: ~ Addition of two 0.6 second pyrotechnic delay cartridges to allow a safe ejection sequence with the rear seat = Connections to the OFS - Seat pan: = Heavier weight breech initiator assembly to house the larger, more powerful breech cartridge ~ Trombone pipe fitted with non-return valve for the CFS: Main beams: ~ Addition of manifold assemblies to mount the pyrotechnic delay cartridges ~ Additional and modified pipework for the expanded ballistic system BRIOLCK-2 24 ‘The BRIOLCX-2 differs from the BRTOLCX as follows: ~ Addition of a single 0.2 second pyrotechnic delay cartridge to allow the Hamess Power Retraction Unit (HPRU) to operate. ~ Position specific rocket pack designed to provide a differing trajectory than that mounted on the front seat. The pack is fitted with a side mounted bracket to prevent the pack being installed in the front or single position. ~ Parachute assembly with: ~ Special rear parachute pack + Seat pan: = Heavier weight breech initiator assembly to house the larger, more powerful breech cartidge ~ Trombone pipe fitted with non-retum valve for the CFS = Main beams: + Special ballistic manifold for rear seats ~ Addition of manifold assemblies to mount the pyrotechnic delay cartridge ~ Additional and modified pipework for the expanded ballistic system Nov 07 (Amdt 1) Page 1-1-5 Date of Print: 12-dic-2011 KA-B-95-10-00-00A-040A-C_002.fm sasse7a OPERATING CONTROLS 25 The seat firing handle is installed on the upper forward edge of the front ofthe seat pan (see Fig 4). ‘The handle is attached by a link to the seat fring unit which is attached to the underside of the seat pan. A safety pin installed through a hole in the handle and the housing prevents accidental operation when the alteraitis on the ground or during maintenance operations. The safety pin activates a microswitch installed in the fing handle housing. When the canopy is closed and power is applied, the microswitch completes the circuit to light a "PINS" caption on the aircraft central warning panel. To put the seat in the “armed” condition the safety pin must be removed, The election sequence is started when the seat fring handle is pulled sharply upwards. 26 manual separation handle (emergency harness release) is installed on the right side of the seat pan. When operated the manual separation handle starts the hamess release sequence. To operate the handle, the thumb button is pressed and the handle pulled sharply upwards. A linkage, operated on removal of the seat firing handle, prevents operation of the manual separation handle until the seat fring handle is removed from its housing. The manual separation handle can only be used during the ejection sequence in the case of drogue gun of barostatic time release unit failure. Operation of the manual separation handle starts the hamess release sequence from the point of failure. 27 leg line release lever is installed on the right side of the seat pan. 28 Two snubbing units are installed on the front face of the seat pan, one for each leg restraint ine. ‘Adjustment of the length of the leg restraint inas is achieved by operation of the applicable snubber release lever and pulling the lines up or down through the units. 29 An emergency oxygen handle is installed on the left side of the seat pan. This provides manual ‘operation of the emergency oxygen system, should the back-up oxygen supply fail. To operate the system pull the handle upward. 30 Ago-forward control lever is installed on the left side of the seat pan. When operated the go-forward ‘control lever lets the occupant lean forward in the seat. The lever moves in a quadrant with a circular gate at ‘each end to give a positive lock of the lever in the required position. To operate lift the spring-loaded knob on the lever and move the laver fully to the forward ([ree) or rear (locked) position until the knob engages in the ‘gate. On ejection and during dangerous deceleration the harness is automatically locked regardless of the position of the go-forward control lever. 31 A.switch for raising and lowering the seat pan is mounted on the aircraft console. A primary cartridge is percussion fired by means of a gas operated firing unit and two secondary cartridges are fired by the pressure and heat from the primary. The gun consists of two telescopic tubes and a oylinder tube; the outer cylinder tube is attached to the aircraft structure, the inner piston is engaged at the ‘upper end by the top latch plunger. The intermediate piston is situated between the cylinder and inner piston to lengthen the stroke of the gun and to offer restraint against bending loads imposed on the gun during election, The ejection gun is water sealed, having seals installed on the primary and secondary cartridges, the breech and the guide bush. CYLINDER TUBE 2 ‘The cylinder tube is a built up structure consisting of a steel tube with an accurately lapped bore to ‘which are permanently attached top and bottom end fitings. Two housings contain the secondary cartridges ‘which are situated approximately equidistant along its length and four brackets give additional support to the ‘wo guide rails botted on diametrically opposite sides of the tube. The bottom end fiting incorporates the lower ‘mounting bracket for attaching the gun to the aircraft. The upper mounting is provided by a sleeve clamped to the tube immediately above the top secondary cartridge housing. The top end fiting has a square aperture, the cylinder latch, through which the plunger of the top laich mechanism installed on the seat structure protrudes when the seat is installed on the gun. An intemal thread in the top fiting accepts an externally threaded guide bush which retains the intermediate piston. The guide bush is locked by a dowel screw and the secondary cartridges are retained by screw caps secured by locking wire. A crossbeam attachment clamp Is located between the secondary cartridge housing for attachment of the trip rod crossbeam, INTERMEDIATE PISTON 3 “Tho intermodiate piston is a thin walled steel tube with an accurately lapped bore. At ts lower end is a piston head with piston rings installed in the two grooves to provide a gas seal between the intermediate piston and the cylinder tube. At the upper end ofthe intermediate piston an intemal guide bush is riveted to keep the inner piston steady during its travel. Installed over the external diameter of the intermediate piston tube are twelve Wills pressure rings which absorb the inertia forces during ejection. At the end of the gun stroke on operation, the rivets are sheared by the head of the inner piston abutting the guide bush allowing the inner piston to leave the bore of the intermediate piston carrying with it the guide bush, INNER PISTON 4 “The inner piston tubs consists ofa steel tube to the lower end of which is attached a necked portion head equipped with piston rings to provide a gas seal between the inner piston and the intermediate piston. ‘At the upper end of the inner piston is a breech into which is inserted the primary cartridge and firing pin assembly. The breech has a large circumferential groove machined around its outer diameter into which the plunger of the top latch mechanism on the seat structure engages when the seat is installed on the gun. The firing pin unit assembly consists of a body, a sleeve and an inlet connector ‘assembly secured together by three studs and nuts. The body is bored intemally to accept the sleeve and is threaded externally at the lower end to ft the ejection gun breech. The inlet connector is bored radially and Jongitudinally to form the gas transfer port and the lower end is counter-bored to accept the firing pin. The firing pin is secured to the inlet connector by a shear rivet which passes through the inlet connector and the firing pin, O-seals are installed on the sleeve and to the inlet connectorifiring pin assembly to maintain gas, integrity. 6 ‘The gas initiator assembly comprises a body with one inlet port connected to a central chamber, latch plunger and spring, a top cap housing a spring and sleeve and a quick-release pin and chain. The inlet ‘port accommodates the end fting of the flexible hose from the seat fing breech, the hose being secured in the port by the nut and bolt which also secures the quick-release pin chain. The latch plunger is incorporated into the upper half of the assembly and locks the initiator assembly into the firing pin unit, the end of the plunger engaging in the circumferential groove in the inlet connector. The upper half of the central chamber houses a spring and sleeve and is closed by a top cap. The action of the spring on the sleeve, when the Initiator is removed from the firing pin unit, forces the sleeve down preventing the locking plunger protruding into the housing and insertion of the quick-release pin. A hole in the forward end of the body below the top cap accommodates the quick-release pin when the initiator assembly is correctly installed on the firing pin unit and acts as a secondary locking device as it also engages in the circumferential groove in the inlet connactor of the firing pin unit. Ifthe initiator assembly is not correctly installed on the firing pin unit the sleeve prevents the locking plunger from engaging in the groove of the firing pin unit and the quick-release pin cannot be inserted. From the inlet port the gas passes to the central chamber and to the inlet connector ofthe firing pin unit where it impinges on the firing pin, shearing the shear rivet and forcing tho: firing pin down to strike the cap of the ejection gun primary cartridge. The gas pressure developed by ti primary cartridge propels the inner and intermadiate pistons upward. The intial movement ofthe inner piston ‘forces the spring-loaded top latch plunger out of the breech groove back into the oylinder latch (see Fig 3). ‘The inner piston continues to rise, thrusting against the top cross beam ofthe seat, the upward movement of the seat causing the shaped end of the top latch plunger to ride out of, and disengage from the cylinder latch. Further upward movement of the inner and intermediate pistons uncovers the ports to the secondary cartridges in turn which are then fired by the pressure and heat of the primary cartridge. After approximately 37 in. of travel, the skirt at the bottom of the intermediate piston butts against the pressure rings which absorb the inertia forces. The inner piston continues to rise unt, after approximately 72 inches of travel, the inner and intermediate pistons separate, the intermediate piston remaining in the outer cylinder and the inner piston ‘moving away with the ejectad seat. 6 Nov 07 (Amdt 1) Date of Print: 12-dic-2011 Page 1 KA-B-95-10-02-00A-040A-C_002,fm MB5270 ‘SEAT LOCKED 44 Top Lateh Housing (TLH) 2 Plunger flush with outer surface of TLH 3 Cylinder tatch window 4 Indicator plunger flush with surface of plunger INITIAL MOVEMENT OF INNER PISTON 5. Bolted to the inside face of each main beam are three slipper pads which engage in the guide rails on the ejection gun and guide rail assembly. 2 ‘The top cross beam accepts and locates the top of the ejection gun and takes the full thrust of the ‘gun during ejection. Incorporated info the top cross beam is a gas operated piston housing which contains a piston securing a drogue link, The drogue shackle is secured to the link thus attaching the drogue assembly to the seat, The drogue link is held in the piston housing by the piston which is retained in the locked position by a knurled retaining nut and a diaphragm. Alter ejection, gas pressure forces the piston along the housings rupturing the diaphragm and releasing the drogue link. The bolts securing the top cross beam also secure to the lett beam the top latch housing which incorporates a parachute container mounting bracket and to the right beam a parachute container mounting bracket. 3 ‘The hamess power retraction unit serves as a centre crossbeam and provides the upper anchorage {or the seat pan actuator. 4 Four tubular members are positioned forward of and parallel to each main beam and are secured at their upper and lower ends to the main beams by brackets, These tubes carry two sliding runners to which the seat pan is attached by four studs and nuts. The electric seat pan actuator is secured to the lower runner providing adjustment of the seat pan in relation to the main beams. Friction pads are incorporated in the studs Of the top and bottom runners to damp out undue movement of the seat pan and runners about the tubular runners. 5 The drogue gun, top attachment bracket locating the go-forward torque bar, remote rocket initiator {and the oxygen regulator trip lever are attached to the left main beam. Attached to the right main beam are the barostatic ime-release unt, the ballistic and time-delay cartridge manifolds of the gas system. TOP LATCH ASSEMBLY 6 The main beams assembly is secured to the ejaction gun by the top latch assembly (see Fig 1) fited to the left main beam. The assembly consists of a housing containing a spring-loaded top latch plunger, one ‘and of which is shaped to engage the ejection gun inner piston and the other end threaded to accept the top latch handwheel. The handwhee! is a tool designed to permit easy removal of the seat from the ejection gun installation. Passing through the centre of the top latch plunger is a spring-loaded indicator spigot. The upper ‘ends of the ejection gun cylinder and inner piston are machined to receive the top latch plunger. When the ‘ejection seat is fitted to the ejection gun and the handwheel removed, the top latch plunger passes through the upper cross beam and engages with the cylinder latch of the ejection gun oylinder. The shaped end of the plunger protrudes stil further to engage the groove of the inner piston breech. Indication that the top latch plunger is in correct engagement with the ejection gun is shown when the indicator spigot is flush with the threaded end of the top latch plunger and the top latch plunger is level wit or slightly below the housing face. The firing of the gun is delayed to ensure that the ‘seat has cleared the aircraft before the drogues are deployed. 2 “The gun consists of a body containing a time-delay mechanism and a spring loaded fring pin, closed ‘atthe lower end by a bottom cap and threaded at the upper end to accept a barrel. The barrel contains a piston ‘secured in position by a special shear pin and accepts a primary cartridge fitted with a retaining seal. The barrel is provided with spanner flats to assist in arming and disarming and is drilled radially to communicate ‘with @ gas passage in the body leading to a second chamber. The upper end of the piston terminates in two lugs which accept the spool end of the drogue withdrawal line. A cover plate enciosing the time-delay mechanism is secured by four bolts and a countersunk screw. A modification plate secured to the body Is engraved with the delay timing. 3 ‘The second chamber accepts a secondary cartridge and a gas operated firing unit. tis connected by a gas passage to the barrel so that the firing of elther the secondary cartridge or the primary cartridge in the barrel will eject the piston. An inlet connector connects the fring unit to the ejection seat harness release gas system. TIME-DELAY MECHANISM AND FIRING PIN 4 ‘The time-delay mechanism consists of an adjustable fring pin and spring, the firing pin having a rack in mesh with a gear train controlled by an escapement. The gear train consists of a primary spur and pinion, fa secondary spur and pinion and an escapement wheel controlled by an escapement rocker. A spring loaded detent plunger engages a locating hole in the primary spur and pinion only when the firing pin is in the fired position to ensure correct meshing of the fring pin rack and gears when tha gun is cocked, 5 “The firing pin is composed of two parts, a rack-end with fring pin which screws into a fork-end and is secured by a cheese-head screw. This enables adjustment to be made to the ime-delay by altering the position of the rack teeth relative to the teeth of the primary pinion. A shaped sear is inserted into a slot ‘machined in the lower end ofthe fork-ond to restrain the firing pin in the cocked position. A plunger and spring, retained by a cup and pin within the fork-end engages a recess in the sear to retain itn position. A firing lever is secured by a rivet to the sear and is attached to a trip rod which is secured to the ejection gun crossbeam. ‘A roller installed below the sear in the fork-end and two roller bearings above the sear in the bottom cap reduce friction on sear withdrawal. The bottom cap also serves as a guide for the firing pin, the end of which is intemally threaded to accept a cocking tool GAS OPERATED FIRING UNIT 6 “The gas-operated firing unit comprises three components, a cylindrical body, a two-part firing pin and a threaded end cap, The body is bored longitudinally to form a central chamber, which accepts the two- part fring pin, and is counter-bored and threaded to accept the threaded end cap. The external diameter of the body has a central circumferential groove which is also driled racially to connect withthe central chamber. ‘The two-part firing pin is secured together by a shear pin and the rear partis flanged to abut the inner end face of the counter-bore. The threaded end cap when screwed into the counter-bore secures the firing pin in position. Gas pressure from the time-release or manual separation cartridges passes into the central Chamber, impinges on the inner faces of each part of the firing pin and forces the forward part along the body, shearing the shear pin, to strike the cap of the secondary cartridge. The breech is connected into the automatic release ‘systam 50 that gas from the cartridge is employed to actuate the same mechanisms as those actuated by the barostatic time-release unit in the automatic sequence. The secondary cartridge in the drogue gun is fred it ial fring of the drogue gun had failed. The operating handle is a spade type incorporating a thumb button linked to a catch, The thumb button must be depressed before the handle can be raised. 3 ‘To prevent inadvertent raising of the manual separation handle and to reduce the number of safaty pins required to be fitted for ‘Safe for Parking’, a locking mechanism prevents the manual separation handle being raised until the seat firing handle has been withdrawn from its housing. OPERATION Barostatic time-release unit failure 4 ‘The drogue gun will have fired deploying the drogue, but the barostatic time-release unit falls to operate. Pulling the manual separation handle wil fire the cartridge in the breech, the gas from which wil: 4.4 Operate the lower harness release mechanism to release, the leg restraint lines, negative- 4g restraint strap, negative-g V-strap and the lower hamess locks. NOTE. ‘The time-release cartridge will be face fired. 42 Pass up the telescopic tube assembly tothe barostatc time-release unit from where it passes to the upper hamess release and mechanical lock operating piston and to the drogue Shackle link release piston, releasing the upper harness locks, the tie securing the parachute ‘withdrawal ine and the drogue shackle link. 43 Passo the drogue gun which will already have fired. 5 The drogues will deploy the main parachute canopy as inthe automatic sequence. Drogue gun failure above barostatic height 6 the drogue gun fails to operate and the barostatic time-release unit is prevented from operating by the barosta, puling the manuel separation handle wil fre the cartridge in the breach an the gas wil faco fire the time-release unit cartridge and: 6.1 Operate the lower hamess release mechanism (Refer to para 4.1). 62 Operate the upper harness release mechanism, the parachute mechanical lock piston (eter to para 4.2) and the drogue shackle link release piston. 63 Fire the drogue gun through the gas-operated firing unit. The drogue gun deploys the rogues which withdraws the main parachute canopy. The system consists of two. eg restraint lines (one for each leg), two snubbing units, two leg restraint line locks, and a leg garter on each ag positioned below the knee. 2 “The lower end fitting of the lag restraint line is attached to the line by a shear rivet, and to a floor bracket in the aircraft by a quick-release pin when the seat is installed. From this end fitting each ine is routed tp through a snubbing unit installed in each thigh support. Each line is then routed forwards and down through the ring ofthe related leg garter and finaly the taper plug attached to the end of the tine is plugged into the Jock in the extended leg guards of the seat pan. The leg restraint line locks contain a spring-loaded plunger ‘shaped to engage the taper plugs, and ejector springs to ensure positive release of the taper plug when the Jocks are operated. The plungers are connected to the lower hamess release mechanism and are withdrawn 1o release the taper plugs simultaneously with the hamess release. 3 “The snubbing units are handed, each consisting of a housing and a snub lever with a serrated face in contact withthe leg restraint line. The snubbing units permit the leg restraint lines to be drawn downwards, through the units but prevent the lines being pulled upward. To release the snubbing units to permit adjustment of the leg restraint lines, itis necessary to operate the levers fitted on the inboard face of each unit. 4 “The leg restraint lines can be released from the leg restraint line locks by operation of: - the lower harness release mechanism - the leg restraint lines release lever on the right hand side of the seat pan. LEG GARTERS 5 “The leg garters are made of webbing having at one end a female quick-release connector; the other fend passes through a slider bar buckle which has an arrowhead fiting to secure into the quick-release Connector. Two D-rings stitched into the webbing are located at the rear of the Iegs and serve as guides for the leg restraint lines. The garters are fitted above the knee and on the calf above the boot, D-rings tothe rear and quick-release connectors inboard. After tightening, the free ends of the webbing are secured by a touch- and-close fastener. OPERATION 6 ‘As the seat ascends the guide rails during ejection the leg restraint lines are pulled taut and restrain the legs to the seat pan, all forward leg movement being prevented by the snubbing units. When a sufficient load is applied to the shear rivets they fal and the restraint lines become free from the floor brackets, the legs being retained to the seat pan until ralease of the lock is effected by the lower hamoss release mechanism. It ensures that the occupant will be brought and locked into the correct posture during fection gun stroke. It permits the seat occupant to lean forward and twist around in the seat for maximum visibility but restrains forward movement in the event of excessive decelerations. For normal fight operations, the shoulder hamess is free to extend and retract as the occupant moves in the ejection seat. Should the ‘occupant wish, however, the go-forward control handle on the LH side of the seat pan can be moved to the ‘ear (locked) position which wil allow the hamess straps to retract but will prevent them extending. 2 When in the normal unlocked state, the occupant is protected against rapid forward movement ‘under high g-loading by an automatic lock which engages if the straps are pulled out too quickly. Ifthe straps {are pulled out too quickly, the unit mechanism will lock. When the acceleration load is released, the unit will {go back to its normal free state. 1 RH webbing strap 12. An adapter and a goveror housing are attached to the LH end of the contre body and an end cap is attached to the RH end. The spools are engaged ‘on @ common splined shaft inside the body. A thrust bearing is installed between the AH spoo! and the end ap. The webbing straps are wound on to the spols by a torsion spring inside the centre body. The spring is anchored at one end to a fixed spring retaining ring and at the other end to the LH spool. Ifthe straps are pulled out, more tension is put on the spring. A spit nylon sleeve installed on the splined shat extends under the fixed spring retaining ring to protect the splined shaft from torsion spring wear. A governor mechanism on the LH end of the splined shatt consists of a mounting sleeve to which are attached two govemor pawls which {are spring-loaded inwards by two coil springs. A linkage assembly joins the pawls so that they operate together. The end of the shaft is enclosed by the governor housing, the internal wall of which is machined to form teeth. Withdrawal of the webbing straps at excessive speed causes the two govemor pawis to rotate ‘outwards under centrifugal force and engage the teeth on the housing preventing rotation ofthe splined shat {and spool assemblies and further withdrawal of the straps. The pawis will remain engaged with tho teeth on the housing until the tension on the straps is released which will then permit the strap to be pulled out again, 4 ‘A drive screw inside the splined shaft has a square drive at the RH end which engages inside the shaft so that both components rotate together. The drive screw has a four-startLH thread and engages a short female thread in the end ofthe piston inside the centre body. A spacer and shim(s) are installed on the drive ‘screw at the square end to prevent the unit locking up with the straps in the fully retracted position. The piston ‘has a hexagon cross-section and is bored internally, the bore being reduced at the RH end and threaded to accept the drive screw. The other end is internally threaded for a plug fitted with an O-seal. The piston slides in a cylinder which is inserted into the unit from the LH end and is secured by the cylinder retaining nut. The internal bore of the cylinder is reduced at the inner end and has a hexagonal cross-section to accommodate the piston. This prevents counter-rotation of the piston when its horizontal movement is converted to rotation of the drive screw. 5 ‘An operating piston cylinder complete with piston is incorporated in the govemor housing and is ‘connected to the pressure inlet under the governor housing. Gas from seat initiation pushes up the piston Which operates the trip lever to release the spring-loaded pawl which then engages in the ratchet wheel. This ensures that, once the straps have been pulled in, the spools are locked to restrain the occupant during ejection. 6 ‘At the outboard end of the governor housing is a breech with a piston retaining sleeve housing a cartridge. The breech accepts a gas-operated fing unit containing a two-part firing pin. The two parts are joined together by a shear pin. The firing pin is retained in the body by a threaded end cap. 7 ‘The LH end of the splined shaft engages a ratchet wheel between the governor mechanism and the LH spool. A ratchet paw between the body and the governor housing engages the ratchet wheel to lock the ‘mechanism and prevent the straps from being pulled out. The pawl is connected to a go-iorward controt handle on the seat pan, movement of which rotates the paw! out of engagement with the ratchet wheel and allows the occupant to move forward and backward. 8 The centre body Is extended forward at each end and machined to accept plungers and springs Which form the top hamess locks. The lower ends of the plungers are connected to the upper hamess release. ‘cross-shaft, LH and RH mounting plates, to which the ejection seat backplate is attached, are attached to the unit by the bolts securing the RH end cap and governor housing to the centre body. Two lugs on the centre ‘ower body provide the upper attachment point for the seat pan actuator. Four brackets on the rear of the Centre body provide the attachment points to the seat main beams, 8 When the parachute is installed on the ejection seat, the webbing straps are party pulled out and assed through hamess roller fitings attached to the parachute hamass shoulder straps. The lugs on the Oct 08 Page 1-10-3 Date of Print: 12-dic-2011 KA-B-95-10-32-00A-0408-C_001.fm sz/A straps are then plugged into the upper hamess locks. It consists of a handle which engages in either one of two positions in a quadrant and Is connected by an adjustable link and levers to a torque tube ‘Secured to the rear of the seat pan. A torque bar engaged within the tube allows vertical adjustment of the seat pan. The torque bar is attached to the LH main beam, together with an adjustable tolescopic tube, by a quick-release pin. its upper end engages in a torque shaft. The shaft is attached to the harness power retraction unit and has a fork-end which engages the ratchet pawl. OPERATION 11 When the seat firing system is operated, gas is piped to the breech where it enters the firing pin chamber. One haif ofthe firing pin is held by the end cap, so the gas pressure on the other half of the fring pin shears the shear pin and forces the firing pin along to fire the cartridge. Gas from the seat fring system ‘also passes to the operating piston in the governor housing, forcing it upwards to operate the trip lever and bring the locking paw! into contact with the ratchet wheel, 42 The gas from the cartridge strikes the and of the piston and forces it along the cylinder. Horizontal ‘movement of the piston is transmitted via the threaded drive screw, which rotates the splined shatt, spool assemblies and ratchet wheel, winding in the webbing straps to pull back and restrain the occupant’s ‘shoulders. The engaged locking pawl locks the spools in the restrained position. 13__When the go-forward control is operated, pulling out and retuming the straps results in the reverse of the action in para 12 and the piston moves in and out of the cylinder. The position of the piston in the tinder is therefore directly related to the amount of strap wound on to the spools. The handle is connected by a fixed link to the sear of a fring unit installed in a breech centrally under the seat pan. ‘The breech unit holds a cartridge and Is connected by rigid pipe to the base of the outboard seat fring trombone tube mounted on the RH rear of the seal pan. This tube, paired with the inboard MOR trombone tube, is connected to the ballistic manifold mounted on the RH beam of the main beams assembly. Each tube {is secured to the ballistic manifold by the combination of a special adapter coupling and a single quick-release pin arrangement. O-seals are fitted to maintain system integrity. GAS OPERATED SYSTEMS Main system 2 ‘The ejection sequence (see Chap 19) is started when the seat pan fing handle (Fig 1) (9) is pulled by the occupant. The seat pan firing handle is the part of the seat firing system and forms the interface with the seat occupant. The handle is connected by a fixed link to the sear of a fring unit installed in a breech centrally under the seat pan. The breech unit houses cartridge (10) and is connected by a rigid pipe to the bottom of the outboard seat fring trombone tube (16) on the right rear of the seat pan assembly (see Chap 4). ‘This tubo, paired with the inboard MOR trombone tube (17), is connected to ballistic manifold (19) on RH beam of the main beams assembly (see Chap 3). Both tubes are attached by a single quick-release pin. The ballistic manifold (see para 7) directs the gas stream into differing directions. 2.1 Pons in the ballistic manifold pass the gas stream through a fixed pipe to a cartridge (6) ‘mounted in the HPRU. The fring of this cartridge overrides settings on the HPRU and go-forward system (see Chap 10) retracting the straps fully thereby drawing the upper body of the seat ‘occupant to @ more desirable position for ection. 22 BRIOLCX only - From the balistic manifold afixed blanking pipe connected tothe baltic manifold retums the gas stream to the balistic manifold feeding the gas directy through ballistic ‘manifold ports and a junction box to the ejection gun primary cartridge (8) mounted on the main beams assembly ejection gun and guide rail assembly (see Chap 2) 2.3 Fromthe balistc manifold a fixed pipe connected tothe time-delay manifolds passes part of the gas stroam to the first of two time delay cartidges (18) to cater for the time required to ‘complete canopy fracturing. Following the delay created by the cartridge, the gas streams returned to the ballistic manifold and fed directly through ports in the manifold to the ejection gun primary cartidge (3) mounted on the ejection gun and guide rail assembly (see Chap 2) Manual separation system 3 ‘The manual separation system (see Chap 8) can be initiated when an ejected seat occupant pulls ‘on the Manual Override (MOR) handle (13). Rocket firing system 4 “The rocket firing system (see Chap 15) is initiated by a pul-off cord in the remote rocket initiator, cartridge (7) is fired. Gas from the cartridge passes through a rocket firing trombone tube (8) and via a flexible pipe connection fires a cartridge (11) in the rocket igniter, igniting the propellant in the rocket pack (12). Intition by the rear Seat occupant instantly ejects only the rear seat. In the AFT positon if the front seat ‘occupant initiates ejection the rear seatis ejected after a 0.2s delay followed, after further 04s, by the front seat. If the rear seat occupant initiates ejection the rear seat is ejected instantly followed, after a 0.6s delay, by the front seat. The SOLO position is selected if the aircraft is being flown single crew or with a passenger ‘occupying the other seat, In this position the seats can only be fired independently Page 1-11-8 Nov 07 (Amdt 1) Date of Print: 12-die-2011 KA-B-95-10-04-00A-040A-C_002.fm MBs27A Operation 18 On pulling the seat firing handle the sear is removed from the seat firing unit, fing the cartridge in the breech. The generated gas is passed via the outboard telescopic tube to the ballistic manifold from where: 18.1 __ Front seat - (Fig 6) It passes to the HPRU from the upper outboard front connector of the ballistic manifold, to the ballisic-delay cartridges from the connector on the rear face and to the command fring system from the command firing inboard quick-disconnect. 18.2 Rear seat - (Fig 7) passes to the ejection gun gas manifold and HPRU from the ballistic. ‘manifold upper outboard front and rear connectors to the ballistic-delay cartridge from the rear face Connector and to the command firing system from the command firing quick-disconnect. 19 Gas pressure on the HPRU firing unit firing pn fres the cartridge to operate the HPRU and wind in the webbing straps. At the same time gas pressure on the ejection gun fring uni fing pin fires the primary cartridge {and the seat is ejected. 20 The command fring system introduces variations on the basic fring sequence. A pipe connection is provided, interlinking the emergency oxygen set to the regulator via the OBOGS disconnect mechanism. 3 For the purposes ofthis description, the OBOGS disconnect assembly wil be considered as part of the emergency oxygen system. 4 ‘The emergency oxygen system is also mounted to the seat pan, supplying the occupant with oxygen {or a limited period during ejection or upon a supply fallure in the OBOGS system. When ejection is initiated, the supply Is automatically tipped and is continuous up to the mar/seat separation point in the ejection ‘sequence (see Chap 19). During normal fight, the seat occupant can initiate the emergency oxygen via the manually operated emergency oxygen handle. in such cases, the occupant has 10 minutes in which to ‘descend to an altitude where the oxygen supply is no longer required.
