A panel of the HCPTS heard that Dr Kelly failed to maintain professional boundaries with Service User A
whilst providing him with psychological treatment.

The Panel further heard that Dr Kelly had both a personal relationship and a sexual relationship with
Service User A.

Panel Chair Naseem Malik commented:

“Whilst Dr Kelly has expressed her regret for her actions, she has been unable at this hearing to
demonstrate that she has gained a sufficient level of understanding of the magnitude of her misconduct.
As a consequence, the possibility of repetition remains. The lack of insight was such that this Panel is not
convinced that there are steps which Dr Kelly will be able to take to remedy her misconduct.”

The Panel ordered for the name of Dr Jane Kelly to be struck off the HCPC Register.

A cheating psychologist has been struck off after her affair with a patient was revealed when his partner
found their sex texts.

Dr Jane Kelly had been recommended to the man by his partner to help with his anger management
issues.

The patient’s partner even went with him to see Dr Kelly on some of their appointments.

But she was later horrified to find a series of texts describing their sexual encounters in graphic detail.

The Health and Care Professions Council heard Dr Kelly and the patient began a sexual relationship
within months of their first meeting in 2015.

The patient had recently become a father with his partner who actively encouraged him to see the
psychologist who she ‘trusted’.

Softly spoken Dr Kelly told the panel she was stuck in an unhappy marriage which led to a ‘gradual shift
in boundaries’ between her and her patient.

She was later suspended and levelled with divorce proceedings when the affair came to light.

Dr Kelly admitted breaching professional boundaries by engaging in a personal and sexual relationship
with the service user.

The Gloucestershire-based psychologist also acknowledged her actions constituted misconduct and her
fitness to practise is impaired as a result.

She described to the panel how she had ‘taken a couple of months out’ in the aftermath of the
relationship and has since sought help from a number of therapists.

‘My husband was beginning divorce proceedings so things were difficult on that front,’ said Dr Kelly.

‘I have left the marital home.

‘I have two young children.

‘Things were difficult in my marriage so we agreed I would move out to a rental property and I had to
make lots of financial arrangements - things to do with the divorce.’
She confirmed she is currently still in the profession, but in an ‘administrative role’ following her
suspension.

The panel also heard Dr Kelly still feels ‘hugely guilty and embarrassed about events’
