Format of the exam- 70 minutes long in total

1. Short answer questions (10 marks) (10 minutes)


This section will be made up of factual recall questions worth a mark each. You
need to give a brief answer to these questions.

2. Paragraph answers (20 marks) (30 minutes)


You will need to write two paragraphs in answer to the questions you choose
(about 1/2 page per answer). You will be given 6 questions and will need to
choose 2 to answer. You will need to explain reasons/effects/factors/events,
using specific examples. Remember to think about detailed PEEL paragraphs
(Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link (to question)).

3. Sources section (15 marks) (30 minutes)


This will be made up of 3 questions on what a source can tell you (selecting points
and information), reliability and usefulness. Remember that reliability is whether
you trust the source, if it is biased, exaggerated or one-sided; think about who
wrote it, when, why and what it says. Usefulness includes reliability in it but you
also must evaluate the quality and quantity of the information, comparing it with
your own knowledge and explaining what’s missing.

1. Who should be King in 1066 – who were the candidates and how good were
their claims to the throne?
2. The Battle of Hastings – what happened in the battle and why did William
win?
3. How did William control England? - Domesday Book, castles, violence/fear
and the Feudal system.
4. The Crusades – why people went on Crusades and the effects of the
Crusades.
5. Castles – features, why they were built, how/why they changed/developed
over time.
6. Thomas Becket – why and how was he murdered.
7. King John – was he a good or bad king; what was the Magna Carta and why
did he sign it?
8. The Black Death- causes, symptoms, effects on England.
