b. Definition
i. “Generally Speaking, a proverb is a succinct and persuasive saying
proven true by experience” (Arnold & Beyer).
ii. Proverbs are not promises (e.g., 22:6).
iii. Proverbs are not commands (e.g., 22:24-25; 24:27)
iv. Proverbs are generally true, not true in particular situations; they are
context-sensitives. Usually true; not always the case.

2. Job: suffering of the righteous (Job 42:5-6).
3. Ecclesiastes: Suffering the righteous (e.g., Eccl. 7:15; 8:14; etc.).
4. There are exceptions to the rule.

- Some say proverbs is just secular wisdom, but there is no realm of life separated from
God for Israel.

- Wisdom doesn’t represent Christ in 8:22 for it is created, but Jesus is greater than
wisdom as the wisdom of God (1 Cor. 1:24, 30; Col. 2:3).
- Earthly riches and blessings point to eternal blessings and riches.
