A plasticizer is a substance that is added to a material to make it softer and more flexible, to
increase its plasticity, to decrease its viscosity, or to decrease friction during its handling in
manufacture.

Plasticizers are commonly added to polymers such as plastics and rubber, either to facilitate
the handling of the raw material during fabrication, or to meet the demands of the end
product's application. For example, plasticizers are commonly added to polyvinyl chloride
(PVC), which otherwise is hard and brittle, to make it soft and pliable; which makes it suitable
for products such as clo… (more)

A plasticizer is a chemical additive that is added to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to improve its
flexibility, durability, and workability. PVC is naturally a rigid material, and the addition of
plasticizers helps to make it softer and more flexible, making it suitable for a wider range of
applications.

Plasticizers work by reducing the intermolecular forces between the polymer chains in PVC,
which allows the chains to move more freely and makes the material more flexible. There are
many different types of plasticizers that can be used in PVC formulations, including phthalate
esters, adipates, trimellitates, and epoxies, among others.

The choice of plasticizer will depend on the specific application and performance
requirements of the PVC. For example, phthalate esters are commonly used as plasticizers in
flexible PVC applications, such as wire and cable insulation, while trimellitates may be used in
more demanding applications that require higher temperature resistance and durability.

While plasticizers can improve the flexibility and workability of PVC, they can also have some
drawbacks. Some plasticizers, such as certain phthalate esters, have been associated with
health and environmental concerns, and alternative plasticizers, such as bio-based or non-
phthalate plasticizers, may be used in some applications to address these concerns.

Related How can I determine the amount of plasticizer on PVC?

I think there are a few ways. I would also say that phthalates are a really common plasticizer,
but handbooks would be a great place to start.

I would first try to do H NMR with an internal standard and determine through integration. H
NMR should also allow you to indentify the plasticizer.

If you dont have an NMR you can try though Raman spectroscopy to indentify but it might be
difficult to do qu… (more)

Related What is PVC?

Plastics are also called synthetic resins and are broadly classified into two categories:
thermosetting resins and thermoplastic resins.
The thermosetting resins include phenolic resin and melamine resin, which are thermally
hardened and never become soft again. Thermoplastic resins include PVC, polyethylene (PE),
polystyrene (PS) and polypropylene (PP), which can be re-softened by heating.
Usually, thermoplastics are supplied in the form of pelletised material (compounds) with
additives (antioxidants, etc.) already blended in it. However, PVC resin is often supplied in
powder form and l… (more)

Using a flame source such as a cigarette lighter, torch, or bottled gas burner, hold the sample

Related What is PVC? How is it used?

Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) is a type of plastic used in pipes, toys and containers. It is generally
non reactive to liquids, and does not biodegrade. This makes it a great material for water and
sewer pipes in the home. It will degrade in UV light, which is one reason PVC pipes are usually
buried. When properly cared for, average life span is 20 years.

I’ll tell you the most serious one. Now that low-grade plastic waste is not sent to China, more

greenhouse gases are well as being seriously bad for people with breathing difficulties. I can
live without PVC rubbish sacks thank you, the stuff should be banned immediately.

Related Why is PVC bad?

PVC is made from petroleum and chlorine. It’s about 57-60% chlorine by weight. Feedstock
for PVC comes from oil refinery byproducts and mined salts. The manufacture of PVC
produces environmental pollutants including vinyl chloride, ethylene dichloride, mercury,
dioxins and furans, and PCBs. PVC products expose living organisms to phthalates, lead,
cadmium and tin compounds called organotins.

PVC is not recyclable. When a PVC product is no longer of use, it must be landfilled. Every

and pipes that are… (more)

Because pure PVC is brittle in nature a plasticiser is required to increase its plasticity (soft
mouldable). Most commonly used plasticizers are phthalates.Phthalates based plasticizer
include dioctyl phthalates (dop),dibutyl phthalates(dbp),dioctyl tetra phthalates
(dinp),dioctyl maleate(dom),trioctyl tritrimellitate(totm).

There are many non phthalates plasticizers used to make pvc a maelleble material such as
eposidixed soya bean oiladepate compounds such as bis(2 ethylhexyl )adipate are also
used.acetyl tributyl citrate is one of the most used component to increase the flexibility of

Related What are the different types of PVC?

Thanks for the A2A. The Wiki on PVC gives a basic outline for Polyvinyl Chloride but is a little
vague. Generally, there is Plain PVC, CPVC, UPVC, PVC-U, PVC-M, PVC-O, and Lead Reinforced
PVC; which is being phased out due to health concerns. PVC-O, -M, and -O deal with wall
thickness. There are also different Pipe Schedules of PVC Pipe; (40, 80, etc.)

I will leave it to you to research the particular type(s) you are interested in.
