When substantial weight is removed from the rear of the vehicle, ‘the center of gravity may change and can cause the vehicle to tip forward on the hoist. NOTE: Since each tirelwheel assembly weighs approximately 30 Ibs (14 kg), placing the front wheels in the trunk can assist with weight distribution, 1. Place the lift blocks as shown. 2, Raise the hoist a few inches (centimotors), and rock the vehicle to be sure its firmly supported. 3, Raise the hoist to full height, and inspect the lift points for so support. Never tow the vehicle behind another vehi- cle with just a rape or ehain. It is very dangerous. Emergency Towing ‘There are three popular methods of towing a vehicle. Flat-bed Equipment — The operator loads the vehicle on the back of a truck. This isthe best way of transporting the vehicle. Wheel Lift Equipment — The tow truck uses two pivoting farms that go under the ties (front or rear) and lifts them off the ground. The other two wheels remain on the ground. the vehiole cannot be transported by flat-bed, it should bbe towed with the front wheols off the ground. If due to damage, the vehicle must be towed with the front Wheels on the ground, do the following: Manual Transmission ‘# Release the parking brake. ‘¢- Shift the transmission in Neutral, Automatic Transmission ‘© Release the parking brake, Start the engine. Shift to. position, then fl position. © Turn off the ongine. cauTion: ‘© Improper towing preparation will damage the trans- mission, Follow the above procedure exactly. If you cannot shift the tranemiecion or start the engi automatic transmission), the vehicle must be trans. ported on a flat-bed. «© Its best to tow the vehicle no farther than 50 miles (80 km), and Koop the speed below 35 mph (56 km/h. ‘© Trying to lift or tow the vehicle by the bumpers wil cause serious damage. The bumpers are not designed ‘to support the vehicle's weight. TOWING HOOKS ans TIE DOWN BRACKETS Rear “TW NOWN BRACKET 1-19 Service Precautions Parts Marking Locations To deter vehicle theft, certain major components are marked with the vehicle identification number (VIN). Original parts will have self-adhesive labels or labels attached with a break-off bolt. Replacement body parts will have self-adhesive labels, and replacement engine and transmission parts will be stamped with a code for spare parts.
