Instructions for Completing the Community Profile & Grading Rubric

● Conduct your survey with your census tract (CT) team over at least 2 trips to the community at different times of the day.

● Drive, ride or walk all streets in the census tract.  Walk around parks and go into stores and businesses open to the public.

● Fill in every cell; use “none” or “none found” when no information is entered.

● Spell out abbreviations on first use except for St., Blvd., Ave., Cir., Ct., Hwy., and other postal abbreviations’ found at:
http://pe.usps.gov/text/pub28/28apc_002.htm
● Use the symbol ~ for an approximate number (only for features in the community you are counting. Do not round statistics from the census.

● Use Comments sections to describe important findings and/or list electronic sources.

● Include sources of data (other than the Census and PimaMaps) where requested. For the source, include website link OR author and document
title for any information found online. An APA reference is not necessary.
● The profile is asking for what is inside the boundaries of the CT but also includes what resources are being used by people living in the CT,
which are just outside the CT boundaries. If including a resource or service just outside CT, it must be labeled as such. Example: 0 grocery
stores in CT. Two just outside CT.
● Use the full proper name of all resources EXCEPT for businesses in the Economics Subsystem (use generic names instead). For Example: 2
guns shops, 3 adult entertainment clubs BUT Yoga Oasis and Pima County Sheriff Department
● For location use the address or general location in the census tract. .

● APA/Grammar Tip 1: Compass points (north, south, east, and west) are capitalized when they are part of a proper noun such as South Park Ave.
or South Tucson/Phoenix, etc (the city), but are lower case when providing directions or a location (The College of Nursing is south of Banner
University Medical Center). APA/Grammar Tip 2. Be careful to capitalize all proper nouns and keep generics lower case.
● Keep the report objective. Analysis and conclusions will go into the final submission.

● Before submitting to D2L

● Keep rubric in document for initial submission to D2L Assignment folder.

● Replace the footer on this form with the following: CT #_____ Community Assessment, date, page #. Do not replace the date the form has been
updated.
● Group Reflection
o What do you perceive as the underlying issue (s), and why do they exist?
o What social, economic, political and educational systems are maintaining and perpetuating these issues?
o Do you see connections to public policy at the local, state, or national level?
o What can you do with the knowledge you gained from the experience to promote change?
o What would it take to positively impact the situation (from the level of individuals, communities, education and government)?

● Group Reflection

We feel like some underlying issues in this community might be income and lack of availability of resources. There are not many supermarkets
available (the only one being Walmart) and health food stores are not available. This seems like fresh and healthy food is not readily available to the
community. We didn’t notice any open green areas like parks, so there aren't many opportunities for outside exercise or community gardening. These
underlying issues likely exist due to lack of funds and infrastructure that is placed in this neighborhood.
Social systems like lack of resources are maintaining these issues. It seems like basic resources like shelter and food are not available, especially for
individuals that are homeless or of low economic status. An economical issue may stem from lack of funding that the community is able to receive to
implement projects. The local government (in conjunction with the community) has initiated several projects in solving some of these issues. They have
projects to implement “calming” barriers on streets like speed bumps, integrating more trees and shading plants, and integrating more sidewalks and safe
walking areas (Access Sunnyslope, n.d).
We can continue to support the community by supporting their proposed needs for change. From the small windshield assessment that we
performed, we can anticipate that the community does have issues with minimal green spaces and shaded areas. The community has also asked for safe
walking spaces, sidewalks, and bus stops.
In being able to positively make an impact based on the situation, what would be best is to listen to the voice of the community and focus on their
proposition and make it into motion by establishing what is needed from the community. This involves individuals of the community as well as the
government, to positively make an impact we must continue to keep up and care for the community projects that have been established, as well as listen
and create new projects to further improve the community.
