JORLYN GRACE DELA CRIZ
Panagbenga is a Kankanaey word
that literally translates to “season
of blooming.” That said, the Baguio
flower festival celebrates the
variety of fresh blooms of Baguio
and the Cordilleras. Despite its
cheery atmosphere, the festival is
rooted in a much deeper history.
The Baguio City Panagbenga
Festival is a symbolism of hope
and new beginnings from the
deadly earthquake that devastated
the Luzon island on July 1990. Five
years after the calamity, the
Panagbenga Festival was arranged
annualy with the goal of boosting
tourism and restoring livelihood in
the region.

solemnity intertwines with
jubilation. This ensemble is a
visual representation of the
revered commemoration of the
feast of our city’s beloved
patroness, Immaculada
Concepcion. The hues of blues
and whites symbolize the
everlasting heaven and purity of
our patroness. Like her, my wish
for everyone here is everlasting
peace and purity sent from the
heavens above. May we be

@Roselyn DelacruzThe MassKara Festival of Bacolod
City is one the biggest festivals in
the Philippines. Believe it or not,
the festival has been giving local
and international visitors the
chance to have fun, drink, and
party on the streets of Bacolod for
over 30 years now! To lift the
spirits of the locals and bring back
the smiles on their faces, the
MassKara Festival was created.
The smiling masks were a
declaration of the people of
Bacolod City that they will pull
through and survive the challenges
and tragedies that they are facing.
This annual festival, which is
similar to Brazil’s Rio Carnival,
literally translates to “many faces,”
and is celebrated every October in
Bacolod. Because of the smiling
faces of the mask, Bacolod City
got the nickname of The City of
Smiles.
