The Earths crust is made up of rocks and minerals.

Most of this crust is covered

by water, soil, sand and ice. Inside the crust, there are rocks.
If you compare the Earth to an egg, the crust (outside layer) would be the
eggshell. In the centre of the Earth (like the yolk), there is a liquid core of
molten (liquefied super-heated) rock.

Rocks are made up of two or more minerals. There are about four thousand different
types of minerals. Rocks that contain minerals are called ores.

There are three types of rock:

Igneous Rock formed after the cooling of volcanic lava.

Sedimentary Rock formed when matter is deposited and compacted below the Earths
surface.

Metamorphic Rock formed from igneous or sedimentary rock, after being subjected
to very high temperature and pressure.

If we compare these three types of rocks to different types of chocolate bars,

igneous rock would look similar to an Aero bar, sedimentary rock would look similar
to the inside of a Bar One, and metamorphic rock would resemble a Peppermint Crisp.

Minerals are non-renewable resources, which means that they can only be used once
and not over and over again. What this means is that one day there will be no more
minerals left.

A renewable resource is one that can be used over and over again, such as solar
power.
