RATIONAL FUNCTIONS, EQUATIONS, AND INEQUALITIES || GRADE 11
GENERAL MATHEMATICS Q1

Materials: visual aide, handouts, chalk and eraser

III. Procedure:
A. Preliminary Activities
a. Prayer
b. Greetings
c. Checking of Attendance
d. Review
B. Motivation
 Solve to find the Mystery Word!!!
 The teacher will give an equations to solve and look for the missing letters
to find the mystery word. _ _ T_ O_ _ L – RATIONAL
Directions: Solve and find the mystery word.
1. 3/4 + 2/3 + 5/2 = 47/12 – L
2. 1/2 + 3/4 x 1/2 = 5/8 – N
3. 1/5 + 2/4 x 3/12 = 7/40 – A
4. 1/2 + 2/3 / 3/5 = 35/18 - R
5. 3/6 x 2/5 / 1/12 = 72/30 or 12/5 - I
A = 7/40 F = 2/3 K = 12/25 P = 22/12 U = 12/12 Z = 22/18
B = 3/40 G = 1/2 L = 47/12 Q = 23/18 V = 90/12
C = 5/30 H = 12/14 M = 4/8 R = 35/18 W = 67/50
D = 3/10 I = 12/5 N = 5/8 S = 25/18 X = 45/23
E = 4/3 J = 70/30 O = 9/18 T = 1/13 Y = 26/13
C. Analysis
 The teacher will ask the following:
1. What have you notice to the activity given?
2. Who has the idea of what is our topic today?
 The teacher will help his/her student to understand the lesson about the
function.
D. Abstract
“RATIONAL”
 Real Life Situation using Rational Function
-A “work problem” is an example of a real-life situation that can be modeled and
solved using a rational equation. Work problems often ask you to calculate how
long it will take different people working at different speeds to finish a task.
EXAMPLE:
1. A car's efficiency in terms of miles per gallon of gasoline is a function. If a
car typically gets 20 mpg, and if you input 10 gallons of gasoline, it will be
able to travel roughly 200 miles.
2. The length of a shadow is a function of its height and the time of day.
Shadows can be used to find the height of large objects such as trees or
buildings; the same function rule (ratio) by which we compare the length of
an upright ruler to its shadow will help us find the unknown input (the height
of the large object) when we measure its shadow.
3. The user puts in money, punches a specific button, and a specific item
drops into the output slot. (The function rule is the product price. The input
is the money combined with the selected button. The output is the product,
sometimes delivered along with coins in change, if the user has entered
more money than required by the function rule.)
 Rational Expression – is an expression that can be written as a ratio of two
polynomials. A rational expression can be described as a function where either
the numerator, denominator, or both have a variable on it.
Identify the following algebraic expression if they are rational or not.
1
1. Rational Expression because the numerator 1 is a polynomial (degree 0)
3 x2

x2 + 4 x−3
2. Rational Expression which is also a polynomial.
2

3.
√ x +1 Not a Rational Expression since the numerator is not a polynomial.
3
x −1

x−2−5
4. Not a Rational Expression since the numerator is not a polynomial.
x 3−1

1

5. ( x+2) The expression is equal to so it is a rational expression
( x+2 ) ( x−2 )
( x −2)

 Rational Equation – an equation involving rational expressions.

 Rational Inequality – involving rational expressions.

p(x)
 Rational Function – a function of the form f ( x ) where p(x) and q(x) are
q(x)
polynomial functions and q(x) is not the zero function.

Note:
 f ( x )= y
 A rational equation or inequality can be solved for all x values that satisfy
the equation or inequality. A rational function expresses a relationship
between two variables (such as x and y), and can be represented by a
table of values or a graph.
Rational Functions can be represented in different ways:
1. Domain
2. x – intercept (let y=0)
3. y – intercept (let x=0)

Examples:
Determine whether the given is a rational function, a rational equation, a rational
inequality or none of these.

2+ x
1. =8 Rational Equation
x−1

2. x > √ x+2 None of these

x +3
3. f ( x )=6− 2 Rational Function
x −5

4. 2 x ≥ Rational Inequality
x +4

x 4
5. = Rational Equation
2 x+ 9 x3

NOTE: in order to further expand and understand the topic, the teacher will send the link
for more example related to the topic through email or group chat.
E. Application
Test I. Determine whether the given is a rational function, rational equation, a

rational inequality or none of these.

IV. Evaluation:
Test I. Identify each given using the different ways:
a. Domain (2pts)
b. x – intercept (3pts)
c. y – intercept (3pts)
2
x −4 x−5
