26 BIM PLATFORMS
BIM platforms may be used in diverse ways i building construction: by the
architect for design modeling and drawing production, by an engineer for
structural or energy data management, by «contactor for developing acon
struction coordination model, for fabrication detilng or fr facility manage-
ment, for example: they include varying types of tool functional. Some are
‘marketed to muliple types of user. The diferent marketing strategies land to
‘package with different collections of functionality In ths review, we do not
‘uldess these different uses but consider the major BIM platforms generically,
From the perspective ofits primary product, with references to other products
running onthe same platform. Their uses and limitations willbe considered
‘more explicly inthe chapters ssscited withthe diferent ype of IM users.
‘We consider each platform from the thre levels outlined in Setion 2.5 as
tool, as platform, and a an environment.

‘We consider the Revit platform from the perspective of Revit Architecture
Revi isthe best-known and current market leader for BIM in architectural
design. It vas introduced by Autodesk in 2002 after Autodesk acquired the
Revi program frm a startup company: Revits a completly separate platform
from AutoCAD, with a different code base and file structure. The version
reviewed here is 2011. Revit sa family of integrated products that curently
includes Revit Architecture, Revit Structure, and Revit MEP. It runs on Win-
dows OS and on Macs, using the Windows BootCamp® plugin. I runson both
52. and 64.bit processors and versions of the OS.

each operation and smart cursor. lis menus are well organized acording to

bidirectional editing from schedules for doors, door hardware, and the Hk.
Revit supports the development of new custom parametric objects andcustom-
ination of predefined objects ts ruleset fr defining objects has improved with
each release and includes trigonometric functions. It can canstain distances
and angles and the number objects in an array. It also supports hicrarchical
relations of parameters. Ths, an object ean be defined by using a group of ub
‘objets with parametic relations, I is mere dificult ro set up glokal param
cers that can constrain assemblies of objects layout and sies. The relese of
the current API provides god support for extemal application development
Revit has aver lage st of product varies, particlalyits own Autodesk
SEEK library for specication and design objects. It carces information for
about 850 diferent companies, and about 15,750 diferent product lines
(Gncluding over 750 light atures). The products are defined in a mixture of
filetypes: RVA, DWG, DWF, DGN, GSM, SKP, TES, and TXT. They ae acces.

Revit interfaces with AWOCAD Civ SD for ste analysis, Autodesk
Inventor for manufacturing components, and with LANDCADD for site plan
ning. It interfaces with US Cost, Cost OS by Nomitech,Innovaya, and Sage
‘Timbertine and slso with Tocoman iLink for quantytskeolf fr cost es-

Project schedules. Revit also supports links to Autodesk Naviswork through
DWF. VICO Office supports both scheduling and quantity takeofs, Revit has
links with specications to eSPECS® and BSD SpecLink through the BSD

Revit is able to import models from SketchUp, AutoDesSys formeZ®,
MeNeel Rhinoceros, Google™ Earth conceptual design tools, and other sy
tems that export DXF fle. Previously these were visible but not referencable.
"They are now referencable in Version 2011 (Ceferencable™ here means that
‘users can slect points on the objects, allowing dimensionelly accurate refer-
cencing, rather thn visual dimensional coordination).
Revit Architecture supports the following le formats: DWG, DXF, DGN,
‘SAT, DWF/DWFs, ADSK (or building component), hum (for area repoe),
FBX (fr 3 view), g6XML, IFC, and ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity)
Revit sa strong platform, especially because ofits range of supporting
pplication.
‘Asan environment: Autodesk ealer invested in Web server capabilities,
such a Buzzsaw and Consructwaze. These existed from the 19906 using Ble
level support, with no visible strategy o support mile platforms.
Revit caries object IDs and seems to manage them well. However, version
and change information is carted atthe file level, nt atthe object level. This
limits synchronization of objets with diferent views in differnt files, Revi is
‘platform but nota BIM environment, It needs to beable to manage objets,
similar ArehiCAD's DELTA Server capability, if tf to support large-scale
BiM environments (fr more detail se Chapter 3, Sesion 3.5)
