World Cup

The World Cup is a quadrennial tournament for men's football (soccer). Quadrennial means
that the tournament occurs every four years! In this worldwide tournament, national teams
compete to determine the sport's world champions. There is a similar sporting event for
women's football teams. It is called the Women's World Cup!

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association, FIFA, created the first World Cup
in 1930. The competition starts with international sectional tournaments and moves
to an event consisting of 32 national teams until the winner emerges! The cup didn't
always have so much participation and grew as the event's popularity grew. From 1930 to
1970, the trophy awarded to the winning team was the Jules Rimet Trophy. Jules Rimet
was the French countryman who first proposed the competition! After this trophy was
permanently awarded to Brazil in 1970, a new trophy–the FIFA World Cup–was used for
the competition.

The World Cup is one of the world's most celebrated and popular sporting events. Billions of
people tune in for the final event!
