HAND, FOOT +
MOUTH DISEASE
A rash that forms on palms of hands and soles of
feet. Blisters are not itchy.

Depending on the virus the rash will either look


like this:

Small, oval white blisters

Soles of the feet and in the mouth

OR:

Red skin rash with brown scale

Rash on the outer arms, hands, legs, feet,


around mouth and upper buttocks

Trunk usually relatively clear of rash

Sometimes has blisters present

Usually not in the mouth

Other symptoms:

Fever

Irritable

Sore throat

Drooling

Poor appetite

Lethargy

HIVES
(URTICARIA)
Usually harmless. It can be safely managed at home
if it is the only symptom.
Look out for other signs of anaphylaxis. Call 000 if
your child has signs of anaphylaxis.

Slightly raised red patches can look like


mosquito bites

Can occur on any part of the body

Often itchy, sometimes sting

Usually last several hours before fading

Usually appears in batches/clusters

CHICKENPOX
Chickenpox is easily spread by direct contact with a
person who has chickenpox, or by fluid droplets in
the air when they cough or sneeze.
If you suspect your child has chickenpox see a GP.

Usually first appears on the chest, back or


face

Can then spread to other parts of the


body, including inside the mouth

Rash looks like small pimples at first

Then become blisters filled with fluid

Itchy

Other symptoms:

Mild fever

Tired

Irritable

HENOCH-SCHONLEIN
PURPURA (HSP)
The cause of HSP is unknown, but it is most
commonly triggered by a viral illness (e.g. a cold),
and it occurs most often in the spring.

Small reddish-purple spots or small bruises

Usually seen on the bottom, legs and


around elbows

Non-blanching

Other symptoms:

Swelling of feet, hands and scrotum in


males

Pain in joints

Stomach pain

Blood in poo or wee

MEASLES
Measles is a viral infection that causes a fever and
a distinctive rash on the body. Measles is highly
contagious and is spread easily through droplets
from coughing and sneezing.
If you suspect your child has measles see a GP
immediately or go to ED.

Red and blotchy

Starts on the head, then spreads to the


rest of the body

Other symptoms:

Fever

Cough

Runny nose

Sore/red eyes

Lethargic

MOLLUSCUM
RASH
Molluscum is a common viral infection of childhood
that causes a benign and self-limiting infection of
the skin.
It can be managed at home.

Small raised spots

Spots may stay on the body for a few


weeks, months or over a year.

Starts by looking like white pimples

Then become round, pearl-coloured


lumps with a white mark in the centre

Usually found on the stomach, face, arms,


legs or in nappy area

Painless and not itchy

ROSEOLA
INFANTUM
Roseola infantum is a common, mild, viral infection
that can cause a temperature and rash.
It can be managed at home.

Small reddish-purple spots or small bruises

Usually seen on the bottom, legs and


around elbows

Non-blanching

Other symptoms:

May cause a sudden high temperature,


followed by the rash

SLAPPED CHEEK
Most children who get slapped cheek do not have
any symptoms, and if they do the symptoms are
usually very mild.
It can be managed at home.

Bright red rash on cheeks

May also have pink lace pattern rash on


their chest, back, arms and legs

May come and go for several weeks,


especially if the skin is exposed to sunlight
or after exercise
